ya not neccessary. esepecially since he closed out so so much in s5 (which itself was relatively weak and not as essential. just simon bitching about the assholes in journalism.)

that saiid i wouldnt mind a miniseries spinoff, as a one off, set in the same universe, maybe focusing on the rise of latino gangs, which apparently was an idea at one point. like pelecanos do it and set it in dc idk. everything else has been rebooted!!!!!!!

yeah would def be more interested in a spiritual sequel than a literal one. would be interesting to cover the two seemingly relevant areas they didn’t really dig into in the wire: gangs and the jails themselves

Yeah David Simon said season six would have focused on immigration/latino gangs. And I think maybe the church was thrown around too.

Season 5 has its moments, but it's easily the worst season due to two things, I think:
    1. Ed Burns' departure after season 4. I really think they canceled out each others' worst tendencies and kept things balanced.
    2. HBO would only give them 10 episodes, which affected The Wire's deliberately slow, zoom out and look at everything pacing. If I remember right the first episode especially feels like it's like three episodes worth of rushed content. It also cut some storylines like about Cheese being Randy's dad, which is hinted at but I don't think ever explicitly stated.

I'm rewatching it two episodes a week right now following along with the Ringer's podcast so I'll see how I feel about it this time lol. But in my experience, season 5 feels worse every time and season 2 gets better every time. Season 2 is classic—just not quite as classic as 1/3/4.

I'd like to see a spin off with ziggy and the duck and see what kind of hijinx they get in together

I can see why season 5 isn't as praised as the others(excluding season 2 which is still boring AF) but it's my personal favorite. Prime Marlo and McNulty plus the Newspaper stuff which I thought was fun. Scotty Templeton>>>

You should rewatch season 2 if you haven't in a minute—I've grown to like it about as much as season 1 honestly. Soooooo much of season 2 sets up the rest of the show. It's jarring coming out of season 1, but I think that was necessary to show that the systems we're dealing with are so much bigger than simply cops and d--- dealers.

A lot of people trash season 5, and I don't think it's an outright bad season, but the whole serial killer thing does cause it to stray away from the realism of the first four. It's not an absolute deal breaker for me, but it's one of the few times you have to suspend your disbelief a little bit in The Wire. Still, there's good stuff there—Marlo vs. Omar alone is fantastic as is the last episode. And Slim Charles murking Cheese point blank gets me every time lol. Cheese is so despicable it's hard to feel sorry for him in any capacity.

    I'd go:

You know what’s interesting about this is recently I read - I believe from Simon - that Latino gangs would’ve only been done if s5 was longer or if they’d been given two seasons. Either way they always wanted to prioritize and close w journalism.

And also re: Randy and cheese I think Cutty got the short end of the stick during s5 too.

Right. What do you mean gangs though? The “Dickensian aspect” of the show does undercut the chance to rly see prison culture though we do in moments w dangelo in s2 etc. would be interesting to rly get into the birds eye minutia of being arrested and processed - which u could consult on heh - then sent and have like weebey become ur mentor etc

i just mean that the show doesn’t really touch on g--- culture at all, but to be fair the wire might not have been the vehicle for it — i don’t really know anything about baltimore

My first run through I hated season 2 as well, but on repeat watching I started liking it more and more. I still put it near the end in my ranking but ahead of 5 which isn't saying anything bad with how great the series was. McNulty's character really jumped the shark in season 5...and just remember, with no season 2, there's no Fuzzy Dunlop

The biggest g--- is BGF Black gorilla family. You may remember a few years back an inmate at Baltimore city detention center was found to have f----- and impregnated a bunch of female COs. He was BGF and they were essentially running that jail. Def that was the culture there for a bit: the g--- problem now isnt as bad as it was in maybe 2015, they assess ppl heavily for g--- affiliation at intake to keep them separated . Or try to. Ofc one large issue is this weird subculture in the inner city black community there where a lot of the COs went to high school w the inmates, know their cousin or something. Strange power dynamics

    Also YouTube Brooks Robinson :)

One thing I decided on this rewatch is that honestly I hate Nicky way more than Ziggy. Ziggy was an idiot, but I at least have some empathy for the guy. His dad forced him into a dying industry he's clearly not cut out for and he was relentlessly bullied. He's annoying as s--- sometimes, but everyone has a breaking point.

On the other hand Nicky was a whiney, miserable prick who f---ing hates his girlfriend and kid and gets mad when his Mom doesn't make him breakfast when he's like 30 years old. And not to mention a huge racist.

lol very true. Also agree on the first watch it is a shock going from season 1 into 2. You're watching a professional illegal organization that runs well with a few idiots to all of a sudden you have a bunch of gustavos in season 2 dressed like eminem in 2005 who are just a bunch of mopes selling dope in the same spot every day, not hiding their stash

Recently completed a rewatch. Still great as ever. I also purchased All The Pieces Matter, a behind the scenes book about The Wire.

Is there any shows last 10 years similar or anywhere near as good as The Wire or Sopranos?

GOT & Walking Dead are not for me at all. Ozark I found quite good. Power was good but lost its way.

Gomarah was probably the best modern show I have seen.
