Jul 26, 2025 Tough question, and honestly, it’s heartbreaking to even think about. Humanity has seen a lot of dark times, and sadly, there’s no shortage of examples. The Holocaust is often the first thing that comes to mind, over 6 million Jews were murdered by the Nazis during World War II, along with millions of others: Roma people, disabled individuals, LGBTQ+ people, and political prisoners. It wasn’t just war—it was systematic, industrial genocide. But it’s far from the only one. The transatlantic slave trade lasted for centuries. Millions of Africans were kidnapped, sold like objects, shipped in brutal conditions, and forced to work as slaves—mostly in the Americas. Families were destroyed, cultures were erased, and the effects are still felt today in racism and inequality around the world. Another one is the genocide in Rwanda in 1994—about 800,000 people were slaughtered in just 100 days. Most of the world stood by and did nothing. The Cambodian genocide under Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge killed around 2 million people in the late 1970s—basically a quarter of the population. People were murdered for wearing glasses, speaking foreign languages, or being educated. Let’s not forget about the Armenian Genocide during World War I, the Bosnian Genocide in the 1990s, or the atrocities committed under Stalin’s regime in the Soviet Union—millions died in forced labor camps, mass executions, and famines. Even today, there are serious human rights violations happening—like the treatment of Uyghur Muslims in China, or the war crimes and civilian bombings in Syria and Gaza. Many people would also say that ignoring the climate crisis, which is already hitting the poorest parts of the world the hardest, might be seen as a slow-moving crime against future generations.
