Jan 22, 2016 So yeah, why do most rap listeners who seem to fall under the "younger than 20 demographic" have some sort of bias against old school hip hop? Heck, I'm not even talking antique hip hop like Rakim or Krs but anything before the 00s seem to be uncharted territory for newer rap fans? Do they just have a hard time relating to the subject matter, maybe it's too "hardcore" (i.e. Dead Prez, NWA) and not friendly enough for your gated gleaming community? For the rec Lil wayne is one of my top 5 favorite rappers and I dig Future, but I still find the climate of the 90s to be buttloads better than now and the output destroys today's.
Jan 22, 2016 my personal reason is mainly sound quality. it irks me to no end when things sound genuinely old. Add to that, that a lot of the production of old school sounding hip hop just doesn't appeal to me on any level and I'm left with nothing...
Jan 22, 2016 Its not that i dont like it I just havent found many songs that i could really vibe to The only old school songs Ive found that i can REALLY enjoy are California Love I Wanna Be A Baller like idk old school just doesnt really do much for me at all
Jan 22, 2016 I love all forms of hip-hop whether it be new or old tbqh. I don't like the idea of people calling each other dustheads or trap packers like as if you're cheering on a sports team.
Jan 22, 2016 by saying this i am also saying there still might be some old school i havent heard yet that i MIGHT like
Jan 22, 2016 The barebones/archaic sound is prty nice honestly, I sometimes prefer the sparser sounds of the time to now where every nook and cranny of a beat is completely full and no stone is left unturned. Also, I find that complaint pretty dumb, tbh, it's like saying you can't read old literature cause of the "language" that's not on them, lol.
Jan 23, 2016 I'm younger than 20, and f--- with s--- from the 80's and 90's and f--- with s--- being released currently Didn't even know this "bias" was a thing.
Jan 23, 2016 if the sound quality is a certain way that makes it sound 'bad' to me, and if the production isn't in a style that appeals to me... then how/why am I suppose to keep listening to it when I'm obviously not enjoying it and not going to? while you might genuinely find it all charming and enjoyable, it's completely possible someone else may have opposite feelings on it, and there's nothing 'dumb' about it. it just is how it is
Jan 23, 2016 Find it really easy to listen to both. Anyone is doing a big disservice by not checking out both considering there is great music in every era.
Jan 23, 2016 I love all eras. Production definitely sounds dated now adays. But even s--- from 5+ years ago is starting to show it's age. Music just continues to evolve.
Jan 23, 2016 Hip Hop is youth oriented and more about the present. The younger generations believe in this the most. They're mostly focused on whatever artists they grew up listening to and whatever is going on now. Of course, in a few years, the artists they like will be considered "Old School" and the cycle continues. It's probably a big reason why I think the future sustainability of Rap music is bleak. This is one of those genres where Old School rappers tend to be viewed unfavorably. Other genres tend to worship their older artists. I grew up in the 90's, so I grew up on those records. I also learned to appreciate the 80's because that era came first. It's true, it's a dated sound but that doesn't mean that it holds no value. A teenager or person in their early 20's, the 2000's is viewed as Old School.
Jan 23, 2016 Why though? I'm not deliberately trying to antagonize you, but like what about it do you not like? If anything production from back then aged like wine cause nothing sounds like it and when young blood do rap over throwback s---, people are blown away by it. I said it's dumb because people try to listen to old school hip hop, with an ear for new school music. It's about as pointless (and dumb) as trying to read older literature while complaining about archaic language or trying to attribute modern character attributes to older characters where their reasons for doing something would be completely different from now. Yes yes opinions are nice and everyone has different tastes, I know. Also word to Tone Riggz, Idk why hip hop completely s----s on the old rappers whereas rock fellates old rock artists and treats them like gods.
Jan 23, 2016 it just sounds dated to me? the production and mixing and everything about it... generally don't like the samples and I can't get a vibe going for most of it at all i can't speak for everyone, but that isn't the case for me. I'm not at all blown away by it
