Nov 22, 2020 This album changed my whole perspective on music. What an absolute statement from an artist that was written off after the Taylor Swift incident and initial public reaction to 808s. From Good Friday’s to the official release. What an era. what’s everyone’s top 3? I’d have to go: Lost in the World Runaway Gorgeous
Nov 22, 2020 Omfg. Today is a very f---ing special day. 10 years. Finally. I remember being geeked about this same day last year. But this marks a full decade. I was a few weeks removed from just turning 21. Kanye restored my faith in music and humanity in The Summer and Fall of 2010. He had that whole summer on lock with Good Fridays. I miss those days. Fell in love with a freak college freshman bih @ Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan, during this particular album rollout. Listened to all The Good Fridays religiously and splashed little mama to 'em. Had her so hooked on Kanye, she chalk-sketched The Alternative Version of The College Dropout Cover Art over her windows. This little gem from "Blame Game" comes to mind. "You always said Neezy, I ain't your right girl. You'll probably find one of them "I like art"-type girls." (I know the lyric said Yeezy, but she called me Nia and Neezy. Two nicknames shorty gave my black ahh. Appropriatin' this melanated meat, this pretty little JuggaLette thotty was. *Baby Carti Yoda Voice* *Clears Throat* But I'll digresssssss. *Patrick Stump Voice*) I miss my boy Matt Kessler. I f---ing miss him. He didn't even get to make it to 30 and he would have been this September 20th. My f---ing heart hurts. Bittersweet day, indeed. We blasted this and Recovery and became the best of friends through Skype Conference Calls with a mutual friend of ours Ben Stone and this dweeb named Anthony Russo. My Jersey Boys. R.I.P. Matt Kessler. I'mma smoke and blast this album for you, my dog. *Sighs*
Nov 22, 2020 in recent years i’ve played a handful of the good friday songs a lot more than the album itself. i’d say a lot of it still works extremely well and some of it just too overwrought for its own good—that’s the double edged sword of making everything so blown up and ornate which, to be fair, works better here than on most other albums, period. one emerging consensus i’ve seen is that the first half is this so phenomenally good that it obscured some shakiness on the back half. i don’t really agree with that at all. i think “h--- of a life” is minor but still pretty good; the stuff i don’t ever feel like returning to is, like, the intro, power, all of the lights, monster.
Nov 22, 2020 Good Fridays was one thing I wish Kanye wouldn't have ended so soon. Christian Dior Denim Flow and Don't Look Down > * Don't Look Down was the first time I heard a Big Sean verse and said, "Okay." And this was f---ing 2010, man. Crazy. Took him a while to come back around to that level of lyricism.
Nov 22, 2020 When I look at MBDTF, I kinda take it in as the era as a whole. So while I know those tracks aren’t on the album itself, it kinda puts the cherry on top for me. If I had to look at the album in a vacuum, I’d definitely rather have CDDF and a couple others on there, but to me it’s splitting hairs.
Nov 22, 2020 Curious about your intro take @WPG is it the whole intro/outro of the song that gets to be a chore, or you just don’t care for the entire song like that anymore? that RZA beat it still so smooth to me, and the little bridge part at the end like “the sky filled with herons” is fantastic I think. I can definitely understand your view on those other three tracks
Nov 22, 2020 Yeezus became closer in quality as the years have passed on, but I still could never bring myself to outright say it's better. I might draw the conclusion that they were equally as impacting on the culture and influential to artists like Travis Scott and other producer/rap act hybrid-type artists though.
Nov 22, 2020 the rza beat is cool and i like kanye’s first verse but the nicki intro is stupid and the song drags. it’s telling that it’s one of the shorter ones by run time but one of the few that i’m always waiting to end
Nov 22, 2020 Being 16 in this era, makes this prime music for me. Like, objectively I guess people can argue that other rap is better, but to me, this is the pinnacle of hip hop
Nov 22, 2020 Haven’t stopped playing it all day. It dropped during my senior year so the sentiment for any music from that year is already exponentially more significant to me. Can’t recall any other album ever that I was this hyped for; we had the Good Friday tracks, the 30 min Runaway vid in October...bought this off iTunes the very moment it hit midnight. I absolutely agree bro, I’m fine with anyone saying there are objectively better albums, but this just feels like the best rap album to ever grace my presence.
Nov 22, 2020 The excitement every Friday of waiting for him to drop that weeks song was wild. Man, every one came through too. Lupe snapped, Rae snapped, Big Sean, f---ing a young J. Cole came through with a life changing verse at that point. s---, just thinking about that time puts a smile on my face about to go throw on the vinyl
Nov 22, 2020 Crazy coz it feels like it's been more than a decade to me for some reason. Tremendous album and the stories connected to this project are legendary in their own right.
Nov 22, 2020 A little side note. Sheesh, the ten years from 6-16 feel like forever, but from 16-26 (now) feels like a blink of an eye. Life is weird, man lol
