May 24, 2021 So being a grad student, I read & come across some really cool research in this field that I think would be really cool to share! The tax burden on the middle class is bigger in Texas than California! Shout out @Sign Language (I believe you live in Texas right? Lol). I know @Captain Awesome AKA Papa will take his rounds with this one lol: some data showing that violent protests in 2020 led to increased vote shares for Donald Trump. This is also consistent with a paper published by political scientist Omar Wasow last year that showed violent protests after MLK’s murder in 1968 contributed to Democrats losing the presidential election that year:
May 24, 2021 @Enigma then why are people leaving California in droves to move to places like Texas? Cheaper housing and no state tax come to mind. Not saying what you posted is false. Just trying to understand, as someone who isn’t a polisci major
May 24, 2021 good to know my instincts were once again correct ty @Enigma!! if u come across any good ones on energy (carbon capture, wasterwater, oil & gas, etc) lmk!!
May 24, 2021 I don't think certain men of Industry with 100s of millions (Joe Rogan) and billions of dollars (Elon Musk) are moving from California to Texas for the tax laws... I think they are doing it for the marriage/ divorce laws. Everyone else who thinks it's a good idea to move from California to Texas to save on taxes is stupid and don't realize that they won't save any money on taxes and don't know they will never be billionaires.
May 24, 2021 Idk! If I had to guess, a variety of factors: cost of living in Texas I would imagine is still cheaper on average. Also, Texas has some booming local economies that are really beginning to expand so that comes with increased job opportunities. Housing market too. I would also note, Texas has a reputation of being “cheaper” than the costal states & while we’re seeing research that may not be entirely true, it doesn’t make the perception go away! People still believe that it’s cheaper!
May 24, 2021 Austin and Houston’s housing prices are soaring. I think some people just wanted to leave a nanny state too. Of course I’m speaking for California expats I’ve spoken with. Seems like less red tape here than in California. Texas taxes companies less too. Although Texas doesn’t have a state tax, they get you with the property taxes. Also, less taxes for middle class people in cali doesn’t seem like it would mean a lot with studios renting for $2,000 Do you have a chart or something that compares cali taxes to Texas taxes by any chance?
May 24, 2021 if you click on the article, they have an interactive graph showing the effective tax rate for middle class people across the country. You can click each state & it shows you.
May 26, 2021 Zoom classes resulted in lower grades for students but the effect was small great piece on racial politics in the U.S. This passage in particular stood out to me: farming subsidies granted due to Trump’s trade war increased Republican vote shares but not enough in swing states to win elections.

May 27, 2021 Immigration yields crime reducing effects. If I had to pick the most consequential research that has happening in political science in the last 30 years, it would be the researched touched in this vox article. If you want to understand how people form political opinions, this is how:
Jun 17, 2021 Really awesome research showing that providing the homeless with housing improves a variety of social factors (crime, employment, public health etc.) while offsetting the costs within the first 1.5 years! partisans misperceive partisans from the other party as “extreme” which causes animus/dislike. That animus/dislike declines when they are corrected that most partisans from the other party are moderate & only engage in politics occasionally. Conservatives are worse at distinguishing truth from falsehood mostly because falsehoods tend to be conservative positions (think: 2020 election was rigged; COVID is a hoax; masks don’t work etc.) some cool sports/poli sci research: hate crimes declined after soccer star Mohammad Salah joined Liverpool! This research really shocked me: experimental study that showed political ads can change party identification for short periods of time. Great read!!
Jun 17, 2021 This is rly interesting and affirms one of my projects irl: Cost effective, efficient, seamless micro housing
Jun 17, 2021 It really emphasizes the need for more affordable housing in the U.S. Especially where I live here in California. The issue seems to be in CA/Bay Area at least is that people agree with the idea that affordable housing should be built but don’t want it built in their communities because of stereotypes associated with people who live in affordable housing. Or they don’t want their property value to go down because public housing is down the street from where they live.
Jun 17, 2021 ya thats one of the things this model does -- it mimics the look/feel of buildings in the neighborhood. so at least aesthetically it doesnt have the public housing stigma/feel if u walk by it
Jun 17, 2021 This. Most people are fine with advocating for it until you mention it being built near them. My grandparents are stereotypical northeastern democrats. Always bragging about how woke they are and how they care about the unfortunate (even though they live in an ivory tower). I drafted a fake (but appeared to look very real) article about how a massive section 8 complex was to be built less than a mile from them. Never seen a switch up that occurred so fast lol.
Jun 17, 2021 On a more serious note, I feel like solving the homeless issue isn’t as complex as people make it seem.
Jun 18, 2021 @Trackz a fellow Republican says he is going to send his Ukrainian/Russian hit squad to k--- your girl Luna. Do you think this is normal American politics?
Jun 20, 2021 @Enigma @Captain Awesome AKA Papa thoughts on this video? I think she pretty much nails it. I feel Rogan is a--- cheeks on certain topics (guns, free speech, cancel culture) and has platformed some bigots and grifters over the years...sometimes he pushes back, sometimes he doesn’t. But he’s also left wing and progressive on many issues.
Jun 20, 2021 @Enigma @Captain Awesome AKA Papa Forgot to add this...I also feel Rogan likes to just simply “s---t the s---” with people of all political ideologies and goes along to get along too much. More pushback is necessary with some of his guests IMO.
