Jun 10, 2024 Since there's been a lot of Encore talk in the Eminem thread recently and the rollout is moving at such a glacial pace, I figured I'd make another srsbsns stan fiction thread. So here's my reinterpretation of Encore, without attempting the lost errand of recreating whatever exactly Eminem had in mind before the Straight from the Lab leaks: Instead I put my own spin on the album using only 2003-2004 songs that I can still enjoy. While released in 2005, "When I'm Gone" was apparently recorded in early 2004. If true it seems likely that it was originally intended for Encore but didn't make the cut for whatever reason (maybe "Mockingbird" replaced it). If that's the case then it probably would have been the closing track instead of "Encore", since it ends with the sound of curtains closing. This may also explain why there's an official (original?) version of "Encore" with an instrumental ending instead of him shooting all the concertgoers -- whereas in "When I'm Gone" he kills Slim Shady instead. In any case this alternate ending is much more interesting imo, and would have made "My Darling" as the opener on Relapse the more appropriate, since Relapse would have picked up right where Encore left off ("But I already killed you!"). If Wiki is to be believed that "When I'm Gone" was written in late 2003, that would mean Eminem hatched the idea of officially killing off Shady over 20 years ago, maybe toying with it ever since. I renamed the "Final Thought" skit to "Second Thoughts" since he decides to k--- his Shady alter ego instead of his audience. This makes at least superficial sense after "How Come" and "We All Die One Day": after contemplating death, he changes his mind about offing himself.
