Is it simply because in the political and social climate of 2015 TPAB touched on a topic that everyone could relate to? Or do you really think the writing, production and cohesion was better than gkmc?
Did gkmc have a song as bad as For Free? Imo it didn't and is the stronger project.Groovy Tony, Ordinary Joel, Guma and 2 others like this.(This ad goes away when signing up) -

Because it's much better tbh
Tpab is a f---ing masterpiece, gkmc is just a good to great album to me, never got the hype for it like that (I don't get all the love for sxn80 either)JAKEMCCNASTY, Groovy Tony, Volt Papii and 1 other person like this. -

It's a lot more consistent. I wasn't completely sold on the full album when it dropped but I've found myself constantly going back to it and listening in full.
The highs are higher on gkmc but as an entire body of work, tpab wins. Also the production is >>>>>>>>JAKEMCCNASTY, Volt Papii, samcotts and 1 other person like this. -

Also, One is 96/100 on metacritic, the other is only 91/100crlk, Spiritual Zay, tehparadox and 1 other person like this. -

Because it's all preferences. TPAB is the type of albums I constantly find new stuff to appreciate. I like GKMC but it doesn't have replay value for me and I don't know why...back in the day it would have been pretty high on my list but now I'm pretty much done with conventional rap albums. I'm more into Tpab, The Roots, Danny Brown type of musicSpiritual Zay, tehparadox, PYT and 1 other person like this. -

First, let me say that sxn80 is my favorite kendrick project.
Regarding tpab (vs gkmc), I just feel like kendrick worked harder on the instrumentation and the lyrics that he put forth. I can feel the emotion in every word and it seems more calculated that Good Kid Maad City and has such a wide range of sounds. Definitely more dense and personal than Good kid. The best thing about tpab though is the production, which is why we also have to give credits to his producers.
But like someone said before, Tpab would be like the underground champion and gkmc the mainstream champSpiritual Zay, tehparadox, PYT and 1 other person like this. -

With kendrick, you just get this clear sense of knowing exactly which direction he wanted to take the albums in. I just didn't get that vibe while listening to gkmc, it might be my least favorite kendrick "album"Spiritual Zay, tehparadox, PYT and 1 other person like this.(This ad goes away when signing up) - Jul 7, 2025

For Free isn't genius. It's well written but it doesn't sound appealing at all to mecanyouduck, Ordinary Joel and Chad Warden like this. -

Really don't get it either. GKMC was a classic. TPAB to me is just a great album. People kinda forced the TPAB classic narrative. I don't know. I'm kinda biased because TPAB isn't all that to me.Ordinary Joel, Groovy Tony and SliK like this. -

TPAB just has like an old feel to it but in a sense it's new to hear those old sounds. GKMC was great, don tget me wrong, but TPAB was just out of the box and different. Why didn't you like TPAB? (those who didn't)Cj Hall, tehparadox and PYT like this.(This ad goes away when signing up) -

I'm like 80% sure anyone that loves GKMC but s----s on TPAB is just doing it to be cool. It's different when you like both though.GoldenPM, tehparadox and PYT like this. -

And because gkmc is overrated. Remember when people were comparing it to take care?crlk, Spiritual Zay and tehparadox like this. -

no I love backseat dude, probably one of my favorite kendrick songs.
I was referring to Real and Compton. I also don't like Poetic justice that much but I wouldn't call it badSpiritual Zay, tehparadox and SliK like this. - Jul 7, 2025
