This is my main problem with eminem, edgy lyrics stays interesting for a bit and then it becomes boring. I like his funny tracks like Without Me more, because he doesn't take himself that seriously.

I'll always hold that Em's first 3 albums are classics. Sure, they may not have aged as gracefully as other classic rap albums but they represent a time capsule - they follow a story line from SSLP to TES (and even 8 Mile) thats cohesive, inventive and unique. Of course the novelty of being a white rapper helped, as did the co-sign from Dre and the Stan army he procured along the way. But you can't deny Eminem hit the nail on the head, finding the middle ground between mass commercial appeal while still being a highly respected, technically proficient emcee. Not many others have managed that. I f---in love the new generation, Thugger, Future, etc. and hate the whole 'real hip hop' shtick but you simply cannot OBJECTIVELY disregard the the 99-03 Eminem. I'm not saying he's the GOAT, I'm not saying he's top 10 and I'm definitely not going to try defend any of his work post '03 (because its all garbage and its ruined his legacy) but I call bs on anyone that doesn't appreciate his best work.

I understand SSLP, I still think it's a classic, but I think MMLP and TES are set in stone

At this point i don't even care what he says, i just want him to get rid of that terrible flow and make something that is sonically enjoyable.

Young Thug is an amazing artist :sweatt:
This is seriously proof of that. His flow is dope as well :emoji_fire:
Eminem wishes he could be go be that good. Instead he makes stupid songs like Sing For The Moment, Lose Yourself and Yellow Brick Road :scust: Em is overrated.

I think if people can articulate why there's nothing wrong with that. At the time Em was tapping into societal tropes that were being questioned and confronted. Obviously that gave him a lot of critical support for being bold or whatever. But that doesn't have any staying power as far as quality goes. All three of his first three albums, except for SSLP, are already dropping from borderline classics to just great for me

SSLP will probably the only project from his prime to maintain its charm

Right. There are certain songs on MMLP or TES that will always be great (Marshall mathers, criminal, who knew, till I collapse, white America, etc) but as albums they seem to function less and less as time goes on

Good post. I still love his work from his prime but I'm realizing that doesn't have to mean his first three albums are masterpiece

On that note, they can still be good/great and not amazing, and still be classics or staples for the genre. That's fine

I'm just trying to open up a discussion surrounding the tunnel vision most people have when it comes to his work

honestly the thing that makes me cringe when thinking about MMLP is D12's existence. If D12 weren't on that album I think it would look much better than it does. Bizarre completely derails Amityville, and the Under The Influence track is just pure s---. Aside from the fact their verses are s---, the performances sound like they're reading their verse for the first time and it got put on the album :'(

Thanks bruh, I agree 100%. I also can't stand the tunnel vision fans, but by the same token I feel like people on the other side of the debate overcompensate by trashing his first three albums which just isn't fair. I mean Cool J has maybe 2 classic albums out of 14 but just because the majority of his work sucks doesn't detract from the brilliance of Mama Said Knock You Out or Radio. For me (and I think hip hop fans in general) its important to pay homage and give respect where its due. DMX might be a crackhead who hasn't put any good music for over a decade but godamn if his first 2 albums aren't classics.
