To address the topic at hand, I'd like to talk about where I'm at with Drake at the moment
Prior to its release, Views to me felt like it was going to be Too Big To Fail. Part of this was the amount of time Drake was taking to complete it (he announced the title what? Like 2 years ago?). Part of it was that he was now becoming bigger than ever and I thought he'd want to capitalize that (sort of like Wayne did in his prime with C3 - not his greatest work, but exactly the album he needed to release in 2008). Part of it was that I was extremely intrigued by the sound he pursued with If You're Reading This; while I wouldn't quite call it uncharted territory, it was a substantially darker atmosphere than I had been expecting from Drake, sort of reminiscent to House of Balloons/Thursday-era Weeknd. While that tape was a bit spotty, I took solace in the fact that Drake himself admitted as much, and said his next album would be far more cohesive.
Turns out that not only is If You're Reading This more interesting than Views, it's better. Views is the newest album from the biggest artist in the world, and it feels like it. In this case that is not a compliment. Drake sounds like he's got nothing to prove here, and there's nothing driving the making of this album outside of a big fat paycheck from Apple. Most of the attempts at introspection were executed to far greater effect on Take Care or even Nothing Was the Same. The poppier songs sometimes hit the mark (One Dance, Controlla, and especially Hotline Bling are irresistible), but the album's 80+ minute running time is a slog to get through. This isn't helped by some lyricism that flirts with (doesn't achieve, but flirts with) Recovery-era Eminem levels of cringeworthiness. The Bentley line in the opening song genuinely sounds like something that would appear in an SNL parody of Drake. Plenty of other lines throughout the album (the Happy Meal line, "Chaining Tatum", the double cross line) are equally painful.
None of this is to say that I think Views is a terrible album. There are a lot of fun songs on here, many of which will be getting plenty of play from me in the months to come. But overall I can't help but think that it marks a major missed opportunity for Drake.ANOZ, lil uzi vert stan, Ordinary Joel and 16 others like this. -

actually you backpedalled and used EVOL specifically, at the beginning of the thread it was future in general. Side note, although its definitely his most stagnant project, it's definitely not average, and arguing your point by choosing the least stand out tape is a cheap way to defend your point, as is "it's just my opinion bro!"
Dude you live in Australia and post almost exclusively in sections filled with reel hip hop heads detatched from reality, this isn't even a personal attack but how can you even pretend to have a grasp on the modern rap scene? I live in Houston and most people I know (17-mid-20s demographic, I guess) f--- with future and those who don't listen to G Eazy and talk about how real his s--- is.Ordinary Joel, dkdnfbdjdkdddjdjfvcgfl, DKC and 3 others like this. -

since i dont expect Drake fans to respond since they dont have much of a vocabulary which is why they coined the "yikes" one word posts...let me try to help you my friend
i dont listen to music as much anymore, i give opinions too rashly sometimes, @WPG posts are very detailed and i learnt to trust him when it comes to music most of the time, so when i say "my krazy life" is boring and he says "Album of the year"..i go "hmmmm maybe im missing something"....but again, i dont expect Drake fans to truly understand simple human logic that involves two people having an adult discussion and one part of the convo have the ability to change the other point of view
i guess in Drake language you call that "turn the L upside down now its a 7" ..f---ing r-----ed line that means absolutely nothing outside of 2 years old playbook..jesus christOrdinary Joel, dkdnfbdjdkdddjdjfvcgfl, Ricky and 2 others like this. -

bro the corniest thing anyone can do is try to build an album v album argument and resorting to "x song is better than y album alone". show some critical thought, that's such a cop out statement
recovery is trash, but unfortunately it's the best we'll ever see from a once legend.Ordinary Joel, mow, Chad Warden and 2 others like this.Nov 17, 2025(This ad goes away when signing up)
