Apr 5, 2016 people do not become the greatest rap artists of all time by being popular. nope. i've heard from tons of people (as in a half-dozen-plus) that drake is the only serious rap artist (i.e. not flo-rida or pitbull) who has full verses and songs written for him, not just augmenting/hooks/concepts, which is much more rampant.

Apr 5, 2016 jay's popularity is absolutely a reason more people cite him as the greatest of all time more frequently than, like, doom. sure. but no one says "jay is the greatest--look how long he was popular!", or at least that's not their primary argument. jay put out two of the greatest albums ever made (and four others that were wildly popular) in his first six years. i think it works this way for a lot of people: kendrick, jay, kanye, etc. i don't think drake is incapable of sitting down and writing a song start-to-finish; i'm saying that, according to people who work with and for him and his label, it's not--or at least is no longer--something he thinks is important to his creative process.
Apr 5, 2016 I guess it's the artistic integrity vs the final product argument. Should we ignore that maybe Drake get's a lot of help, if the final product is excellent. Does this downplay Drake's accomplishments. I'd probably say it does to an extent. But then again having FULL verses/songs written for you is an extremely serious allegation. I was always under the impression that Quentin gave him a few flows or a few lines. And the people in the studio at the time all contributed by helping with concepts etc. As a Drake fan it's disappointing to hear that he's having full songs written for him.
