my aunt has 4 boys, all with autism, and never asks for s---. she works her a--- off trying to create a better life for them, never asking for donations or anything.

My son Bill was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder when he was 4 years old.

I wasn't sure where to turn or what to do. I did some research, and enrolled him in speech and physical therapy, but one of his biggest breakthroughs came almost a decade later, during a 12-day summer program he attended through a scholarship from Autism Speaks.

It included sharing an apartment with other teenagers, having a job on a local college campus, doing laundry and chores, and keeping his room tidy. Bill flourished, and because of that experience, I'm now confident he'll be able to thrive in a supported environment on his own someday.

All parents hope for independence and success for their children, but for those with kids on the spectrum, at times it can feel impossible.

That's why the resources Autism Speaks provides for independent living are such a godsend. They help parents like me feel more confident about our children's future -- and that is absolutely priceless.

Bill continues to grow. He discovered a passion for beading jewelry at camp, and was known as the "Jewelry Guy" at his high school which he just graduated from. His talent for it helped him bond with his classmates -- and he even has his own Etsy shop now.

Bill's life is not without challenges, but he takes joy in the simplest things -- like a sunset, spending time in nature, or finding the perfect stone for a bracelet he's working on. He takes pride in what he does. His life has meaning.

I'm so proud of how far Bill has come, and grateful to Autism Speaks for the role they played. And he is, too: Bill now donates a portion of the proceeds from his Etsy shop to Autism Speaks to say thank you for helping him discover independence.
