Dec 21, 2015 You can't just make assumptions about what type of guy J. Cole is and what artists he listens to based on that quote though. He would absolutely call Kendrick about Young Thug, and I'm sure he probably already has. Thug is a future star and the industry knows it - 50 Cent, Pusha T, and Vince Staples have all publicly praised him. Young Thug has some of the best melodies and cadences in rap right now. As a rapper who also has really good cadences, J. Cole would prob be a fan. You can't just write Young Thug off as a trap rapper, he's so much more. Future too, I don't even remember a song this personal on any of J. Cole's studio albums. J. Cole consistently tries to make music based on interpersonal relationships, but he hasn't really exposed his own life or his own hardships at this level outside of a few bars (first things first, rest in peace Uncle Phil and the first verse of Apparently).

Dec 21, 2015 I wouldn't say he doesn't like trap music. In interviews before he's talked a lot about the balance between dumbed-down rap and lyrical rap and he's said that type of music is important. The game needs a balance. Plus he's made a song with 2Chainz, who is pretty generic at times.

Dec 21, 2015 Mike, nobody agrees that Kanye is the goat, (Please don't eat me alive now) Kanye was always more of an overall artist and he is/was a very good one. Kanye is in a position now where he tries to regain relevancy again ( which imo he doesn't need to,he's Kanye but he probably thinks he does). I just hope he doesn't make this mistake to think he needs those guys. Kendrick and Cole don't need them either. Have you heard adolescense? Have you heard his earlier discography ?
