After reading this one, I searched for other Best Rap Albums of 2015 lists and hip hop was all over them. So there is nothing like blues, jazz or some dope rock s--- lol :D

in all seriousness, i dont get how the epic is top three, but tpab isnt even top 52 lol. kendrick is all over this list via other projects, and cited for his work on compton specifically, yet...

its just spiteful and doesnt make a whole deal of sense beyond this is a reaction to the overhype.

Gotta say I think it's a blemish on this forum that people can't argue over a list like this without ad homineming the authors to death.

It can't be that this really is, in their estimation, the 50 best records that came out this year?? They have to be disingenuous somehow because their tastes align with those of us who think Kendrick was underwhelming and the order is different than a lot of other lists?

    Stop being lazy, guys.

No, that's silly.. tpab is (by far) the record of the year -- it's certainly among the most discussed, if not the most praised by countless reputable year-end lists. You don't find it curious that a site would completely leave it off it's top 52 list, despite honoring the project of one of it's chief collaborators? I'm not arguing it should be #1, mind you, but for them to pretend it doesn't exist? Like, why give an honorable mention slot to D'Angelo but not Kendrick? It strains credibility, like a film critics list leaving the godfather off a 1972 wrap up. ("People are rly sleeping on Brother Sun, Sister Moon tho!")

there's an argument tpab is just that bad/this years hip hop is just that good, sure -- but, by the same token, you can also argue politics played a role. But to characterize it (of all things) as a blemish on this forum... talk about ad hominem lol

because the d'angelo record is a near-masterpiece and kendrick's isn't very good? former was honorable mention only because of its release date. otherwise would have been top five.

it's a huge huge huge huge huge reach to say kendrick is "all over" this list--he raps on compton and two guys who did some instrumental work make appearances. the latter two made phenomenal records , and i don't think i'm being obtuse when i ask how that makes a kendrick omission look suspect? would leaving twista's kamikaze off of a 2004 list get the same reaction from you? and kendrick simply raps better on compton than he does on his own album. i'm tired of talking about this.

you shouldn't be tired of talking about this lol, bc you posted it here, and these lists exist for discussion. sry im challenging you!!

hes featured on several of the projects cited (at least 2), referenced in other writeups (i think), and as you mention, tpab collaborators are given high placement (you likely know better than me but is it accurate to describe kamasi's contributions as "some instrumental work"?). regardless, my point is less literal. it's more that its just the elephant in the room. omitting tpab, given its looming presence this year, without explanation just feels like a deliberate slight. maybe it's wholly organic, sure but the choice to not acknowledge the album's impact at least culturally, strikes me funny. it just does. i doubt kamikaze is to 2004 what tpab is to 2015 for a myriad of political and creative reasons. i think my comparison to film critics ignoring a cinematic behemoth like the godfather to be more apt

fair point re: d'angelo... was black messiah not on last year's list? personally ,something should either be in the discussion or not... i know it varies so ok

im not challenging ur expertise, but i am politely arching an eyebrow to the logic. if thats beyond the pale, my b!!!!! pls dont hurt me

compton and....where else? i'm not doubting you're right but i genuinely forget where.

maybe this is showing my l.a. bias, but i recoil @ kamasi and thundercat being reduced to "tpab collaborators." these guys had two of my (and, i think, most of the pow staff's) most highly-anticipated albums of the year before we even knew kendrick was dropping. i can say with absolute confidence that their placement in the top ten here has less than nothing to do with an okay rap album they contributed to.

what was the most (only?) culturally impactful single from the album? it was in our top five singles of the year.

came out after last year's list was out.

I knew before I even clicked on the thread that it was gonna be some argument about Paul. Why the f--- are we always arguing about Paul instead of saying something like "hey, your list shoulda had Kendrick on it for these reasons?" Instead it's always dumb jabs about "hipster friends." You're two of the better writers on this site and I feel like I'm reading YouTube comments, when it could be way more interesting than that.

im not knocking paul for being a hipster? i think i raised valid points about the list without calling for pow's office (aka pauls living rm jay kay) to be burned to the ground. i tried (i think) to keep the discussion to the nature of lists, and how outside factors sometimes contribute. its not personal whatsoever on my end.

isnt he on LA off ty album? im too hurt to revisit the list at this point. :emoji_slight_frown:

its not about reduction re: kamasi... but i think he had a major influence on tpab, etc. so it's curious why one (great) album in included and another is ignored. we're talking offline but as a fan of both albums i just question the logic.

i think we need to officially define things like "cultural impact" and "hipster" -- we're all approaching this with various rhetorical trap doors.
