No, that's silly.. tpab is (by far) the record of the year -- it's certainly among the most discussed, if not the most praised by countless reputable year-end lists. You don't find it curious that a site would completely leave it off it's top 52 list, despite honoring the project of one of it's chief collaborators? I'm not arguing it should be #1, mind you, but for them to pretend it doesn't exist? Like, why give an honorable mention slot to D'Angelo but not Kendrick? It strains credibility, like a film critics list leaving the godfather off a 1972 wrap up. ("People are rly sleeping on Brother Sun, Sister Moon tho!")
there's an argument tpab is just that bad/this years hip hop is just that good, sure -- but, by the same token, you can also argue politics played a role. But to characterize it (of all things) as a blemish on this forum... talk about ad hominem lolMeero, Oldboy, Ordinary Joel and 5 others like this.Apr 25, 2026(This ad goes away when signing up) -

bruh i dont think ive even heard 50 albums this year
thats what im sayin...even someone as into rap as me....i can't say ive even heard half the rap projects on this list. and thats not even stepping out of the genre (which ive neglected to do so for a few years now)
so, like, its just people's bias getting them upset when in reality the people curating theses lists have put in HOURS upon HOURS of time into listening to albums we havent.
So, like, obviously, our eyes scan for TPAB or something (and then get to typing whiny self important outbursts if you're perry), but what if TPAB was only so high in our books because we didn't hear a lot of other, equally great, s--- you know?
the more expansive your scope is, the easier it becomes to stop overrating s---
that's why my tunnel vision gets me into trouble sometimes (when its not setting me apart as a high class tastemaker obviously)Last edited: Dec 21, 2015TommyGun, gorealsteady, white jesus and 5 others like this. -

Well considering you and your hipster pals purposely name obscure records to seem knowledgable, it shouldn't be a shock. -

in all seriousness, i dont get how the epic is top three, but tpab isnt even top 52 lol. kendrick is all over this list via other projects, and cited for his work on compton specifically, yet...
its just spiteful and doesnt make a whole deal of sense beyond this is a reaction to the overhype.Ordinary Joel, DKC, Enigma and 4 others like this. -

you shouldn't be tired of talking about this lol, bc you posted it here, and these lists exist for discussion. sry im challenging you!!
hes featured on several of the projects cited (at least 2), referenced in other writeups (i think), and as you mention, tpab collaborators are given high placement (you likely know better than me but is it accurate to describe kamasi's contributions as "some instrumental work"?). regardless, my point is less literal. it's more that its just the elephant in the room. omitting tpab, given its looming presence this year, without explanation just feels like a deliberate slight. maybe it's wholly organic, sure but the choice to not acknowledge the album's impact at least culturally, strikes me funny. it just does. i doubt kamikaze is to 2004 what tpab is to 2015 for a myriad of political and creative reasons. i think my comparison to film critics ignoring a cinematic behemoth like the godfather to be more apt
fair point re: d'angelo... was black messiah not on last year's list? personally ,something should either be in the discussion or not... i know it varies so ok
im not challenging ur expertise, but i am politely arching an eyebrow to the logic. if thats beyond the pale, my b!!!!! pls dont hurt meGoku187, Ordinary Joel, DKC and 3 others like this. -

...Haven't heard OME's Catcher Of The Fade yet imma check that out now. Nice list nonetheless, I'm a big fan of most of the rap releases on it. -

but why move on?? the ONLY reason its not listed is so we can talk about it
we are literally doing the thing they wish we would do..there is a page in that site where they went "yo you listing tpab?? remove it so we can create the exact same played out s-----y tactic to get people to talk"
pitchfork did it years ago with Eminem and they blew the f--- up
its a cheap tactic but it worksMeero, what, Jehovah and 1 other person like this.Apr 25, 2026(This ad goes away when signing up) -

who cares if its albums from mars? its 52..and its missing the album that will win the grammy
its always selective criteria aint it? when you guys want to list something based on only goodness you can black out the importance of it...but if you want to list something not so good but important, you revise the criteria
this s--- is played out mate and obvious...TPAB is among the best 52 album of the year no matter what kinda s--- shape you wantsoul intent, Ordinary Joel, Jehovah and 1 other person like this.Apr 25, 2026(This ad goes away when signing up) -

You just said they don't exist, and now you're defining them :s
I learned about Saigon on that show after I fell in love with his first album.
Well I have. I checked it out once I saw the XXL freshman list last year, but you claiming I haven't kind of proves my point regarding how obscure this list is.
I would love to know the size of the demographic you're aiming for
And this is my point. You pick the most obscure albums so you can make the argument that those who challenge the validity of the list haven't heard most of it. I wouldn't be surprised if you haven't heard all of these yourself. You've probably only skimmed some of them. But talking about hiphop, to you, has always been about trying to prove you're more informed then other listeners. You're really just a walking, hipster caricature, to the point of parody.Franch46, soul intent, Jehovah and 1 other person like this. -
