you can't call people "haters" if they give reasoned arguments for their positions. i don't generally love breihan but that's a fair review.

Good article, I've had an idea for a piece on how Travis is basically a worse 2015 version of Game for a minute.

the thing that kills that for me is that so much of game's appeal was staked on regionalism

True, but regionalism matters a lot less in 2015 than it did in 2005.

i disagree, but even if that were the case, it would make them dissimilar in how they're presented to the public. travis is being pushed as an auteur; i think a closer analogue would be someone like rocky, where the variable is their respective abilities to mimic other styles

Isn't Rocky (with his first mixtape at least) probably the best example about how regionalism doesn't matter as much? He can be from New York and sound more like he's form Houston and no one cares. I'm not saying region flat out doesn't matter, but do you think an artist like Rocky would have found as much success in 2005 before mass free mixtape distribution was as big as it is now? It makes it a lot easier to find an audience when you're from one place but sound like you're from somewhere else.

Or were you comparing Rocky and Travis, not Rocky and Game?

Does it seriously bother people when someone isn't the first to do something?

Like, I'm not even defending Travis here, I truly do not see what doing something thats already been done but with a slight twist is unnapealing. I see the appeal in originality, but not the distaste at the opposite

You need to have your own voice. Travis doesn't. He's a few recycled lyrics away from being a cover band.

Question for you, @Narsh, @BigCountry, etc

Can you find me a song that sounds exactly like, say, pornography?

If he's as hardcore of a biter as yall say it shouldn't be hard.

I asking because while I understand the components that make Travis Scott are derived from other artists, the end product is something I like that I don't quite hear in that form from any other musician. If there's more music like rodeo that's just as good or better than Travis than please show me because I haven't found s---

When you listen to a song 200+times in a single sitting you get bored of hearing the same thing over and over.
Same goes with rappers who "bite", we've heard the same before from an artist already, so we're bored before their career even begins.

I remember you once brought up the question of what regional sound Clipse belonged to and their example fully applies to this question. But it does still makes me appreciate more how mixtapes have always turned out to be vital in opening doors for so many great acts; from G-Unit to Wayne to Kendrick Lamar amongst countless examples.

I would go so far as to say with exclusion of dis side and antidote, which are clearly jacking other's styles, every single song stands on its own and doesn't have a clear origin. Just because for 5 seconds he sounds like thug on i can tell or something of that nature, it doesn't excuse the fact that the entire song, sonically, hasn't been done before in its form. Travis DOES have his own sound, it's dark niche 1dagirl production and cheery xx era tracks like the toro Y Moi aided flying high. It's decent raps spit at a growl and singing that sounds unique but threatens to veer to closely to Cudi or future at times (see oh my and I can tell, again)
