alright, let's get this going for real.

    album #2:

    The Clipse & The Re-Up g---, We Got It 4 Cheap, Vol. 2 (2005)
the clipse were responsible for a sea change in critical and popular attitudes toward rap in the mid-2000s. there were residual, crudely-drawn party lines from the so-called "mainstream-underground" wars, but def jux was no longer a key player, nor was rawkus the same. (predominately white) rap fans who had listened exclusively to aesop rock claimed they now listened exclusively to coke rap. what's impressive is that the clipse were able to be this sort of touchstone while in the midst of one of the worst label purgatories of the decade. the jive debacle left them on the shelf for four years between their two masterpieces, Lord Willin (2002) and h--- Hath No Fury (2006). the second of the We Got It 4 Cheap tapes, which features ab-liva and sandman (credited as the re-up g---), is the best, and one of the key pieces of the form's minor renaissance. listen: http://www.datpiff.com/The-Clipse-We-got-it-4-cheap-Vol-2-mixtape.819.html

    M.O.P., Warriorz (2000)

those who have only a passing familiarity with brownsville's best rap group might be surprised they hit their critical and commercial peak so late. they're mostly associated with timbs and broken bottles and clintons, but with the turn of the century came Warriorz, M.O.P.'s hardest and, simultaneously, most considered work, one of the last masterpieces of new york street rap. i think, knowing the average age and prevailing tastes of this forum, that it probably falls in a blind spot for a lot of people. i'll avoid saying to much so as to not sway the conversation. this is our album until next monday.

it's available via apple music. lemme know if you need a dl link of another sort and i'll try to find one.

Gave this a spin today (it has to be years since I listened to it) so here are some quick thoughts:

In usual M.O.P fashion the record is bold, loud and unapologetic. Billy Danze & Lil Fame have this incredible energy only heightened by their ferocious deliveries and like any good duo they have a great natural chemistry.

The instrumentals perfectly compliment the hardcore rhymes, predominantly the production is shared between Preemo & Lil Fame (aka Fizzy Womack when he's behind the boards).

Overall it was a great adrenaline-filled ride. M.O.P are a sight to behold when it comes to crafting street anthems but man I forgot how dope "Foundation" was, really great way to close out the album.
