With don't be a hiphop head I mean, don't be a person who calls themselves someone who only listens to 'REAL HIPHOP'. Relax lol

My vision of a 'REAL hip hop head' is one that only listens to 90's-esque rap and immediately says today's music is crap without giving it an honest listen.
I'm not trying to down the 90's and Underground fans, but I'll gladly down the ones that don't even attempt to try today's stuff before they insult it.

Some pretty horrendous suggestions. A google search would give you good results on essentials btw. To add onto the artists @Fire Squad and some of the albums @Arch Dogg mentioned, here's some more albums you can look into. A lot of it may be difficult to understand the appeal and may take multiple listens.
Beastie Boys - Licensed to Ill
Big L - Lifestylez Ov Da Poor & Dangerous
Black Star - Black Star
Bone Thugs - E. 1999 Eternal
Common - Like Water For Chocolate
DMX - It's Dark And h--- Is Hot
g--- Starr - Moment Of Truth or Hard To Earn (Not sure which is considered more of an essential)
Ghostface - Supreme Clientele
GZA - Liquid Swords
Ice Cube - Death Certificate
Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill
LL Cool J - Radio
MF Doom - Madvillainy
Mos Def - Black On Both Sides
NWA - Straight Outta Compton
ODB - Return To The 36 Chambers
Public Enemy - It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back
Rakim - Paid In Full
Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx

Totally fair. Yea, I wasn't aiming any shade at you, don't worry lol.
Somebody that ONLY listens to today's music and says stuff like "I've only listened to 3 Nas songs and he f---in sucks. Migos the GOAT" is just as bad as what I was talking about, but idk what word to give those people.
...then there's the Strange Music stans...

Thanks for clarifying. I love my Era of Hip-Hop which is 90's, early 2000s more than today's. I do listen to most of today's music though, and not all of it is terrible, I have to admit though..a lot of it doesn't reach my radar for me to give it a fair listen. The stuff I have heard, like most of Thug's stuff..and all that..I'm not a fan of. I like some of Future's music, like the 56 nights album..but I don't understand the appeal of all his music, because I think most of it is terrible.. Beast Mode is good, 56 nights is great, but stuff I've heard in between.. ehhh Like I've said many times..I'm a fan of his hooks..lol Also, I like Riff Raff's music, I guess you can clarify him as "trap". If it's good, I'll listen.. if I don't find it appealing, it won't get a second play.Ordinary Joel, Groovy Tony and Lil Squeed like this. - Jun 12, 2026
