Since he's not signed to a major label, he's not obligated to release his project on a Friday, correct?

is he not on j cole's label? i believe that's an interscope subsidiary.

you were never technically obligated to drop albums on tuesdays, and you're not technically obligated to drop on fridays now. but there are two factors that push everyone to comply:

first, soundscan. even in today's world, your first-week sales are a metric for which booking agents will pick you up, how much your sync deals are for, etc. don't wanna sell yourself short.

second, if you're doing physical product, your distributor basically won't let you break cycle, because their infrastructure is set up to meet a certain day. when release was tuesday, their production and shipping systems would have to be totally reconfigured to make a friday release, and vice versa.

for that second reason (and for a third--ease of media coverage) i think tuesday is a much better release date. you could ship over the weekend, people could line up coverage, etc. but fans, editors, artists, labels will adjust.

@WPG You're right about Dreamville being a part of Interscope, but do subsidiary projects count as a major label release?

I guess it's all irrelevant though if they're not interested in soundscan recognition.

Had a chance to give this a good 4-5 listens while I was at work today. I love this. Idk what I rank it up there with Cozz N Effect or Last Winter, but it's dope. This album is very cohesive and brilliantly flows from track to track.
