Hiphop need not be lyrical in order to be "real music".

Hip hop has way too much dumb downed nonsense. Having skills to write dope rhymes should be something that fans want from there fav artists.

Tbh, I don't give a flying f--- about 'profound lyrics' in any genre. I don't listen for that.

Make good sounding and emotionally impacting music. That's all I care about. :kanye3:

Hip hop was based pretty much on 2 main elements. Lyricism and the beat. You need elements of both for me to consider you a talented artist in the hip hop genre.

I think I said this once before. You could be the most lyrical MFer in the game, but if you dont have the production to go with it, your album is going to be boring as f---. I'll use the wu tang as an example here. Arguably some of the greatest mcs of all time, but I personally find their production boring so I dont f--- with them.

But at the same time you cant just pick a hot beat and maybe a catchy hook, and be s--- with your lyrics. For me that's not talented or being creative. I see a lot of these examples in the dirty south form of hiphop. The same repetitive types of beats and I dont like them. I'll use artists like young thug, future, 2 chainz, soulja boy and iggy as examples of what my point is here.

So yeah for me to enjoy your music you need elements of both. There are other smaller elements I look for too, like the voice for example. I cant stand Wayne's voice so I Dont f--- with him. But right now im listening to bobs strange clouds album. I dont think anyone here including myself would list him amongst the greatest mcs lyrically. I dont think he is bad lyrically by any means. but as a whole with all the other elements he brings such as his voice, singing and production, I find him very enjoyable and I think hes dope

While typing this you were the first person to come to mind lol I knew me saying rap should be lyrical would grab your attention if it got anyone's
My post was pretty self explanatory but when did I say you needed to be a "lyrical mirical rappity rap" to be a good rapper or make a good rap song? If I made it seem as if your skill effected your music than that wasn't intentional

You said for a rapper "being lyrical has to be a main thing right?"

and the answer to that is VERY simple

    no.

what does being "lyrical" even mean? (looking for an answer here)

Homie if that's the case than the earliest rap songs (from the 70s and early 80s) wouldn't be considered hip hop cause the lyrics there are god awful :bookah:
Plus hip hop is a culture, rap is the music for the culture.

    [Produced by Nard&B]

    [Intro]
You know how we be rocking, ya' heard

    [Verse 1]
Bright light shining all bright on the Bentley
Work the Cadillac, panoramic, no panties
    Old school Chevy '55 granddaddy
Gotta throw some salt on it, cause you know I'm getting at it
Throw the fork on it, then put it in traffic
Throw the sauce on it, got it flying out of Dallas
Hope you didn't do it to yourself, that's tragic
Hope you didn't throw away what we established
Hope you wouldn't turn your back on your family
The way a n----- look 'round here, they'll back stab you
Word from your motherfucking brother, young n-----
I just wanna see you happy, I just wanna see you happy
Coming through the cut like a known Grim Reaper
Bout to get it straight finessed, tryna get a little cheaper
Hold on to that clip like a doped up needle
Girl hang on that strip with a four desert n-----

    [Hook]
Nothing but a bad little b---- in some red bottoms
Where ya' man at? heard that the Feds got em
I seen ya' cruise the Land Rover thru the west side
Gold Rolex, better check your peripheral
It's a full moon in the middle of the day
Got them wolves out, rock a little Cartier
Got the trap jammed packed like The Masquerade
Know a few real ones ain’t gon’ see they next birthday
    Tell them young n----s grind
'fore you gon' knock someone down
If they gon' s---t, then s---t something
We better hear 'bout this s--- on the news or something
We better hear 'bout this s--- on the news or something
    Man down over yonder
Young came through holding on the K like a drummer
They done took a boss out n-----, no wonder
n----s getting crossed out n-----, no wonder
Hoes getting X'd out and we on ganja
The police wanna talk, but we won't say nothing
True to these clips, n----s won't say nothing
True to these clips, n----s won't say nothing

    [Verse 2]
Had the Parkay jumping out the Pyrex
High definition glass on my pinky finger
n----s swimming in the water, no paddle
n----s trying to walk with my shadow
The bird on the bezel, I’m a well known rebel
    Told a young n----- Freeband, Roc-A-Fella
    Told a young n----- Freeband, Roc-A-Fella
You can turn this off and I can kick it acapella
We work the frontstreet where mama said: "Don't go"
    We went there
Trap house at bomb with that crack, then we went there
Shawty don't f--- with these folks, these
n----s be telling these days, be telling these days

    [Hook]
Nothing but a bad little b---- in some red bottoms
Where ya' man at? Heard that the feds got em
I seen ya' cruise the Landrover thru the west side
Gold rolex, better check your peripheral

Yeah I would assume rap would be the most lyrical genre in music. I don't see rock breaking down works to make them rhyme how they're not supposed to so I expect this from rap. Do I expect every rapper to do things like that? Of course not. Rhyming simple is still great I have no problem when Eminem does that comes off smooth and effortless. Doesn't need to put words together to rhyme but it's cool when he does. But arguing with you is like talking to a wall and I don't find things like this interesting especially about a genre I don't even like lol. So yeah Narshh you're right your knowledge on hip hop is wpg level it's godly!

There are so many factors to consider when judging rap, lyricism is one element. If someone isn't very good at multis and whatnot but has good flows, good beats, and is generally pleasing to the ears, you literally have to have the thought process of a 12 year old to go "no it's bad because rippity raps"

Music evolves, so complaining that aspects of it are different than its inception 30 something years ago is redundant.
