May 20, 2015 He doesn't use it to disguise the fact he can't sing like so many other artists do (Eminem for example, you think those bridges he does -e.g. Fine Line- are his actual singing voice?). It's always blatantly obvious when Kanye employs it, and gives it this typical vocoder/robot-like feel. He is really creative with it as well, i.e. Runaway's outro.
