Apr 14, 2015I'm going to start this off by saying this. Yes, I did used to really like Tyler The Creator when I was 16-18. At first I didn't really like him because of his awkward production and sloppy flows, it just really didn't seem good to me. An then Goblin finally grew on me and I been checking out the rest of the Odd Future clique up until I became 19. I then started discovering artists like Kid Cudi, Travi$ Scott, A$AP Mob, Weeknd, the late J Dilla. All artists who can make music truly out of the box and unlike Tyler IMO, do it well. I just grew out of the whole Odd Future scene. I then decided to relisten to all of the Odd Future projects I spent my late teens listening to. I found out that alot of them were really good and noteworthy that I still listen to today. But the only artist that I just couldn't enjoy was Tyler. Maybe it's the sloppy flow or immature lyrics and terrible boring beats but I just couldn't get back into him. So when I heard he was releasing a new album, i passed on it at first. But then I heard about it being do bad, you have to listen to it in order to fully understand it. So, I bought into the hype and now, here's where the actual review begins.
Track 1:DEATHCAMP
This track honestly was one of the tracks that I liked on my second listen. I loved the guitar, the upbeat and energy of the track, and once Tyler kept going he was killing the flow here. But one problem that we'll be seeing frequently that will really ruin the album for me. The mixing. Now I've heard people defend the mixing being, well unmixed, because it was done on purpose so it must be good, right? And to that, I will save for a -much- worst track later on but as for the song, I'm going to give it an 8/10
Track 2:Buffalo
This track had potential to be pretty good (also obvious biting from Numbers On The Board by Pusha T) but honestly, the beat couldn't save this even if it was mixed well and was completely cluttered cause this is the same Tyler that I dismissed as Childish. Nothing else to say here except the bass is also too overpowering. I'm giving this a 5/10
Track 3:Pilot
Not really much to say about this track besides the fact this sounds like a cut track from b------ except sounding even worst. Some of these metaphors are pretty bad (ie:I never gave a f--- like I was born dickless) but then again this is Tyler. So, generic Tyler track with a decent beat but horrible mixing. Nice Syd vocals tho 6/10
Track 4:Run
I don't know why but I absolutely love this beat. This is one of the tracks with poor mixing but I I'll give this a pass. Nothing else to say besides Tyler obviously parodying g--- members of America with these skits. It's nice but really short. 7/10
Track 5:Find Your Wings
I absolutely love this song. It's relaxing, sounds fairly mixed, has some great female vocals in here, and is just really nice. BUT THEN, we reach the next track and oh boy is this terrible. But for this track I'd give it a 9/10
Track 6:Cherry Bomb
Now, HERE is where Tyler gets way out of hand with the terrible mixing. And if you heard this, you know what I'm talking about. It starts off pretty nice. Reminding me of Blockbuster Night Part 1 by Run The Jewels. But then, we get an absolute complete blown out base that can damage hearing if you're not careful. This track is inexcusable. There's honestly NO way defending this s---. Like it honestly sounds like Tyler just said f--- it and wanted to purposely make it s-----y and this is why I hate this song cause it COULDVE been great. But just for that, I'm giving this bs a 0/10. f--- this song.
Track 7:Blow My Load
Just an out of place sex song that sounds like a Wolf cut with actual d-ck sucking noises. Not terrible, but still not good. 3/10
Track 8:2Seater
This track Is honestly pretty good. It's mixed pretty well. But honestly, it just goes on way too long and just when you think it's about to end, it comes back. It's a good track but really boring after awhile. 5/10
Track 9:The Brownstains
I absolutely love this track. Tyler shows off all his potential here as a producer and a rapper. So much great s--- here. Shout out to his Juvie flow too. Also let's not forget that Schoolboy Q renegade. 10/10
Track 10:f---ing Young
This track grew on me. Tylers singin on here is terrible but he thankful got the great Charlie Wilson giving background vocals. This tracks subject matter is interesting about a grown man falling in love with a girl in her teenage years. This track is really catchy but honestly goes on way too long. It's better than 2Seater though so I'm giving this an 8/10.
Track 11:Smuckers
this right here Is my favorite track on here. Tyler not only steps up his skills here but Kanye and Lil Wayne show up on here. Kanye gives his best verse since 2012 and Wayne and Tyler do a great job going back and forth between each other. I think it's the beat but this track gave me a We Major by Kanye feeling. 10/10
Track 12:Keep Da O's
Just another s-----y joke track. 2/10
Track 13:Okaga, CA
Im just gonna be honest, I really have no opinion on this track because by the time it comes up I just want this album to end so I'm giving it a 4/10
Closing thoughts.
While I did like 6 out of 13 tracks on this, I can't really say I like the album as a whole. Terrible mixing, too many boring and generic tracks, and overall just way too long. If this was an EP, i would've liked it alot more. And if the mixing wasn't done on purpose to try and emulate Death Grips, i would've liked it alot more too. So overall I'd give the album as a whole a strong 4 to a light to decent 5. I'd give it a strong 6 to decent 7 but the horrible mixing really killed any enjoyment out of this.
