Apr 14, 2015 i don't know about that. i'm a huge it was written supporter and i've brought up issues with gkmc, but the latter is still a classic. each record is deserving, honestly. on the other hand, aquemini is an all-time masterpiece and the eminem show is a vaguely embarrassing melodrama.

FHD is definitely an improvement from BS which was mediocre and very underwhelming (I haven't listened to Sideline Story, and it's been a long time since I listened to earlier stuff). Imo it's a decent album that pleased his (big) fanbase, and def a step in the right direction. What I'm thinking is: you can't guess that the x/100 rappers that focus on different things than Cole for example (who sometimes fails to deliver even by his standards, right) aren't trying or don't care about their music. Music doesn't have to have a deeper meaning or huge doses of introspection to be good, and basically everything can potentially work and make an album appealing: the writing, the atmosphere, the artist's charisma, the production, combinations of them, etc etc, a standard formula doesn't exist. Having said that, we can't know how much effort they put in, and it doesn't really matter to me anyway, it's the music that matters. As you said, Cole tried too hard with BS and failed, how is he better than someone who f---s around and "doesn't try", if he can produce better music? And how is he different than someone who's making shallow or ignorant songs, if they both sound generic? TES still being here is a joke, but many great albums have been kicked so far so who cares, s--- happens
Apr 14, 2015 Great post mate, yea at the end of the day every rap artist has their own form of subject matter/content whatever you wanna call it lol and can be enjoyed accordingly. I think it's simply essential to at least recognize the flaws & strengths of artists you gravitate to, opinions are one thing but it's clear that there are differences in being better or worse.
Apr 14, 2015 I ain't mad at that I find his music compelling and personally I think he has some merits as an artist but Cole's yet to fully back up the hype and suggested promise that normally was expected earlier in his career.
