Mar 30, 2015 I posted some tracks in my YF Appreciation thread here: http://forum.sectioneighty.com/young-fathers-appreciation-thread.t31422/
Mar 30, 2015 I just want to say f--- acid rap and if you don't this message then "NU NU NU NU NUNU NU NU NUNU NU NU NU" EDIT: The Roots How I Got Over was great as well. I might like it more than Undun :O
Mar 31, 2015 Young fathers' projects were all good, but i dont think they would've had a big enough influence or effect on current hip hop to be considered as essentials...
Mar 31, 2015 i was rich g--- 2 officially came out =( having an entire tape of leaks is cool and all, but i mean if classics like these are just loose tracks for these 2, i dont know how anyone can't respect em tbh do you really think it's in the top 25 for the past 5 years? jw..i liked mmlp2 a lot when it dropped
Mar 31, 2015 I enjoy these reads. Great article no matter how much I agree/disagree with it. Killer mike and EL-P should be higher and I have tried and tried o get into kanye and I just cannot. I agree with section 80/GKMC placement, but would not put take care/NWTS together. One was an okay album and nowhere near top 10 IMO and the other was Kmart status. Loved the Danny brown spot...very underrated album. Good read though thanks! Edit. Big Boi too. What a great slept on album
Mar 31, 2015 fantastic list, props to everyone involved. glad to see Lil Herb on there and Pinata getting the recognition it deserves. A little unsure about the Future pick but everything else is on point. oh and LiveLoveASAP > LongLiveASAP?
Mar 31, 2015 nobody's going to fully love the list. those people like me who love cole think 2014 FHD should be on there, but is it essential? people who love the drill scene prolly want some lil' bibby & old keef on there. nobody's gunna be satisfied. i may be biased because i wrote for this, but bottom line, it is a great list.
Mar 31, 2015 I only have 2 complaints, not a big deal. The list turned out pretty good imo as I said earlier. People should realise that something can be great and/or very entertaining without being their cup of tea. Also, all these records made a few waves; I wouldn't recommend J. Cole to someone because I don't listen to him and his progress as a rapper hasn't been impressive, but he's undeniably among the biggest rappers rn, he has a loyal fanbase and his music is decent. Rich g---'s tape was great, Mac Miller's 2013 run was amazing, etc etc. Just because you don't like it, you can't dismiss it. The write-ups are good, the list has variety, and I guess it's more difficult to do it when you have to find common ground with different people. The list can inform the casual listener about some of the best recent records, about the hype of new crews like ASAP or Pro Era, new rappers like Thugger etc Ok, my first complaint is the absence of Open Mike Eagle ofc. I'm guessing he's not very popular or well known, but he's released nothing but quality projects in the last few years. I understand that there's only room for 25, but he deserves one of the (highest) spots here, especially since billy woods made it (I'm mentioning him because he also released great music - solo and with Armand Hammer - and he's even more obscure probably). I think that Dark Comedy, or maybe something else from MMG should make the list. Apollo Brown has been putting too much work, and all their rappers/producers are capable. You can see this thread if you want to check out the label's last album. The second isn't a biggie, but I'd like to see Distant Relatives by Nas and Damian Marley. It certainly shows that Nas still got it in this new decade (after this he made Life Is Good which was good but kinda underwhelming and he's preparing a new album for the latter half of this year I think). Also, it's a great record with a reggae vibe, the chemistry between Nas and Damian is there, and the guests make a good contribution. Dessa is one of my favourite artists and I appreciate not only her music but her other activites too (poetry etc). Maybe I'm a hipster, but I'm certainly not mad that she was "ignored". Her albums are easily better than Death Grips' though, and are certainly good enough for a top-* list. Big LOL @ people bitching about Yeezus. If it wasn't made by Ye no one would hate this much. I'd like to mention clipping. and their album titled CLPPNG now, because they have a kinda similar sound which some people may like (Death Grips fans will like it I think, it's not as heavy though). It's a good album. Also, there's no reason to b---- on someone like Sinatra because he hasn't listened to Undun. The kid's like 15 years old, he's not living in the USA, he's a casual rap listener (with some r-----ed opinions, mainly about Eminem and Logic). The point is that he's willing to look more into rap instead of being dismissive and listening to the same stuff. Not everyone is familiar with the rappers that you grew up with. I might post an unranked list later
Mar 31, 2015 Selection is ok. There are some picks I can not understand at all like Future Beastmode, Lil Herb and Bronson. Don't get me wrong these are great albums but not that good or influential.
Mar 31, 2015 Has anybody in this thread heard of Shabazz Palaces or CunnynLynguists? Back Up and Oneirology should be at least mentioned somewhere in the thread but I only see the complaints about the lack of Oxymoron or MMLP 2. It's a bit ridiculous, to put it mildly. Honestly, I feel like some of you listen to 5 major rap albums per year. It is no wonder that you overreact like a little kid who just received Playstation 4 for Christmas when you come across a great like album like TPAB. Overall I enjoy the list and I appreciate the work that was put in to create it , but I hope you will also take less known albums into consideration next time.
Mar 31, 2015 Distant Relatives is too preachy and corny at times. Plus, it has too many lackluster songs like Africa Must Wake Up or My Generation. Life Is Good is better imo.
Mar 31, 2015 @Olorin which MMG album so you think has a place on the list? Agree on Distant Relatives, great album.
