Just for contemporary examples, If You're Reading This It's Too Late could never receive the type of critical reception that To p---- A Butterfly has. Increasingly so in the critical climate.

Why is challenging music held in higher regard than accessible music?
Is it the elitism in that only a subset of the general population can enjoy it?
Why is experimentation and progression superior to working within well defined boundaries?

    good questions.

I feel like it's kinda like "d--- I wish thought/was good enough at music to do this first" for pop rap, whereas deeper albums are kinda like "d--- I could have never came up with this". If that makes any sense.

Pop-rap tends to lack any real substance, which generally leads to less replay value.

Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.

Substance only has value in an analytical setting which is most often a more private one. A public setting calls for music that meets an entirely different set of criteria.

Yeah I meant more long-term replay value, when not in a party environment. Should've clarified that. All depends on the listener though.

As for critical reception, most music isn't reviewed in a public setting so that could have something to do with the lack of critical acclaim for pop-rap.

Because pop rap usually lacks any kind of substance to the music and is just a bunch of random rhymes over some club beat the lyrics dont really come in to play and there are so many artists that sound the same with the same boring flow and lack of lyrical ability. People like Drake wouldnt of lasted in the 90s/ early 2000s as far as hiphop goes i see him more of a rnb artist. But then you got s--- like Flo Rida and Pitbull who also rap over dance beats which is also kind of pop rap as you call it

    It's not REAL.
it's not from the 90's or earlier
    it's for small minded people
    it's all about cars,drugs,b------s,money,guns
it's mass produced to appeal to small minded people
    it's fake
    it's Lil Wayne's genre.
    it's :trash:

    ...
This post is my impression of youtube comments
    :westbrook:

In all seriousness though, if I'm smoking weed, drinking alcohol, drinking lean, munching xanies, charging durries, snorting coke/MDMA
I don't have time to be listening to a slow-paced beat while Immortal Technique raps about some political s--- i don't care about.

People acting like rap started in the 90s, completely ignoring mid 80s Hip-Hop which is totally party rap.

how can you mention that drake salty album in thesame sentence with TPAB(album of the decade)?

    /thread

Pop/party hip hop songs lacks quality, deep emotions and they fade off within 2-5 months while albums like TPAB will be remembered for many years to come e.g 'Illmatic'

    honest answer?

because a very large majority of people listen to music to escape from real life, while the other half listens to reflect on real life
