The 'insert spacey pop star hook' vs aggressive formula was his most successful and relied upon since the 'funny single' formula. Just because he chooses to do that doesn't mean he's not capable of solo hits. Also I don't care about hits, and neither should he, at this stage. Just making the best album possible.
