1. Grand Theft Auto III will always be the GOAT for me. The concept of a mayhem sandbox game blew my 12 year old mind. I remember watching my friend play for the first time while he drove through a fence, ran a police officer over, beat up a pedestrian with a bat, took their money, and ran up the stairs toward the train station. I emptied my piggy bank, rode my bike to Walmart, and bought it the next day.
The progression and mystery while unlocking the different parts of GTA3 is the best feeling I've ever had while gaming. Each city had something new. The game felt huge. Finally getting over to Manhattan was astounding. Finally mastering that piece of s--- Dodo plane.. Like d---. I still remember the cheat codes.
2. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is a close 2nd. While writing this I've realized mystery is really the single quality that made the GTA series great. GTAIV and V's immediate access to the entire map has essentially ruined this. The size of GTA:SA was unfathomable. The emptiness of the forests and farmland made the game feel so real. Felt like I was literally driving across state. The gangsta theme. Mt. Chiliad jumps kept me occupied for hours. That jetpack tho.
3. Grand Theft Auto V. I don't think I was that hyped for a game release since Tony Hawk's Underground 2. Hands down the best game I've ever played. Online could have been so good but Rockstar f----- that up. Like I said, the immediate open world ruined the mystery of the map. Wish the game started with Trevor in Sandy Shores and we slowly gained access to Los Santos. The 3-character dynamic and special "powers" gave GTA a fresh change it needed. Might go buy this for PS4 tonight because of this post.
