Sep 29, 2017dumbest post i've ever read. Filmmaking is a visual medium, just bc kendrick can tell a story doesnt mean he's a good film maker. More goes into a film than just story.
He's a story teller, not a filmmaker.

Think about it. Section.80 is basically his indie drama about a couple living on Section 8 in Compton trying to live their lives throughout all the terrible s--- in the 80s (crack epidemic, medication, Ronald Regan) and it's basically made in a way that feels gritty but not overtly gritty that it ventures into fantasy.
good kid, m.A.A.d city is basically his big time hood movie about again, some kid living in Compton trying to advance both his career and his life and growing into the person he is today; of course it's through his eyes but it still manages to be a concise product mainly because of the amount of detail he puts into it.
To p---- a Butterfly to me is basically a man who wants to find success, gains success but ends up finding out that the only person that mattered was himself. It wasn't really a political album per say, just a message to stand up for yourself because there's only one you and you can't conform yourself to the world in an attempt to find happiness.
One thing I found out is that Kendrick knows what sound he wants for each album and how it works into the story. Section.80 is basically underground boom bap that's gritty and old. m.A.A.d city is basically modern hip-hop laced with some reflective moments to set the deep scenes tone and TPAB is jazz and funk mainly to present a confused environment in which his character can find himself and revel in what he truly is.
I haven't listened to d--- in full but from what I can gather from the sound. It's a modern dark excursion into a religious person trying to seek salvation or prevent himself from going to h--- and that's what makes up the wonder of what Kendrick does. He's basically brought the art of filmmaking into rap.
Of course, people know him as a rapper but even he knows that the verses that he spits on songs are one-offs designed to impress the listener. That's why he does all these guest appearances; he isn't out to prove anybody to anything but show off and have fun and invoke the listener that he too can one day be as cool as Kendrick Lamar if he just discover himself.
I never realized how interesting Kendrick Lamar was until this very day and I can't believe Kendrick's filmmaking talent hasn't been put to the forefront yet; only his ability to make abstract albums.Interlude, jmillithauglybasedgod, hustleandcuss and 2 others like this.(This ad goes away when signing up) -
