Immature yeah, but immature does not mean overrated. He's brilliantly immature, and then hits you with a serious song. The song 8 Mile blows everyone out of the water and it's a normal song free of shock value.
Immature Eminem is still better than your mature favorite rapper.Alpha, hustleandcuss, BART and 10 others like this. -

I feel this a very true statement.
Much of it is that much of Eminem's material is very immature & its why he has so many younger fans even at 45.
The older I have got I have realised even his best material is overated & not classic material like I previously thought. SSLP,MMLP & TES are still good albums but all 3 have not aged well at all.

Jay-Z might the greatest lyricist ever and calling him basic only highlights your own stupidity. He has songs that an intelligent listener has to listen to multiple times to catch everything he's saying and doing so the fact that you called him "basic" leaves zero doubt that his music goes right over your headBuddha, Mikey, Big Dangerous and 4 others like this. -

The opposite is true for me.
I was always naturally good at English; I say that only to say, as I've aged (I'm now 27; have been listening to Em since I was 9) - my appreciation for Em's brilliance with writing has only increased.
He's an incredibly unique writer.
His image, black, white, controversy, GOAT or not, his place in history, his amount of wack albums and/or songs, the constant drive to look cool or not by liking Eminem (has been happening in cycles since 99 tbh)... Whatever. All that s--- is cyclical and on-going.
But his writing? His uniqueness as a writer, at his best - the way he phrases s---, his intuitive understanding of the power of language, his rhyming skill,. his choice of wording... Seriously amazing.
He doesn't get nearly enough appreciation for how special he is as a writer and deliverer of words, full stop. I see 100 Jay-Z albums in the top whatever, all the time, and over-praise for very basic s---, whereas for the most part... Em gets the short-end of the stick, usually because he's white and the hype surrounding him. A lot of these things are written by white writers, and white rap fans are obsessed / paranoid with looking like they're not obsessed with Eminem or thinking he's the greatest, so some go out of their way to downgrade him.
Which is embarrassing
Just say what you feel to be true, if you can back it up, if it's based on what you feel is truth and you can break it down. Some people are f---ing p----'s seriously. Jay, for example, is NOWHERE NEAR Eminem is a writer. No-where-f---ing-near.Last edited: Sep 25, 2017 -

Idk, sometimes I go back and relisten to his first three albums and still feel they are great.
However everyone has certain taste of music and it keeps on changing with time. Maybe you grew out of your Eminem phase, but him being overrated is just an opinion -

I'd say Eminem is the better lyricist of the two but Jay-Z is one of the most intelligent lyricists of all time and a top 5 MC without any doubt. Prime Jay-Z would make light work of Eminem nowadays. The Box, Big Dangerous, Buddha and 1 other person like this. -

Rap on the whole has aged s-----y which is why I can barely stand it these days. But Em's talent back in the day (esp. in 2000-2001) was, and still is, undeniable. Even if much (most?) of the content seems dated, immature, whatever, his effortless, rhythmically precise vocal delivery, insatiable hunger and creative passion (I think of Amityville in particular) back then still leaves me speechless to this day. The production on MMLP and Devil's Night, too, holds up very well imo.RG9, Buddha, jmillithauglybasedgod and 1 other person like this. -
