Feb 3, 2016 Jakey wins Anyway... GKMC is the superior project for me, but ranking TPAB and S80 is actually harder than I thought. As Section.80 aged, I found more tracks that I start to appreciate more. Like Chapter 6, even though it's an interlude, it's beautiful.
Feb 3, 2016 I'd say To p---- a Butterfly is his best at the moment and section 80 is his worst. But we'll see how that holds over time... good kid, m.A.A.d city was an album that really grew on me, mostly because there were so many tracks that were addictive like most mainstream hip hop songs without seeming too much like mainstream hip hop tracks. Eventually, I became a somewhat huge fan of Kendrick Lamar and I would of regularly had that album in my regular rotation of listening. I even listened to Section.80 a couple times I was hyped up for his next album. Kendrick Lamar released his single "i" and my initial impressions was a bit confused. The song grew on me, but the extremely positive vibe the song had really caught me off guard. To p---- a Butterfly was released and I listened to it a week later. When I listened to the album at first, I wasn't really feeling it. Of course, it didn't help that I was doing other stuff in the background. After really listening to it a couple times aka just paying a lot of attention to the music, I have come to really like this album and it might be my favorite Kendrick Lamar album to date. The thing that is really different to me when listening to this album compared to good kid, m.A.A.d city is that there is a lot more spoken word. It takes some getting used to, but it fits the vibe that this album is trying to portray. The other difference to me is that the beats sound more like a throwback to an older period in hip hop, which does make this album a bit less accessible. Not entirely a bad thing, there are a lot of catchy songs on this album still. The music itself is top notch, I can't really name a point in the album where it seemed like Kendrick Lamar was mailing it in in terms of emceeing. I would advise that it is a whole lot better just listening to this album from start to finish. To p---- a Butterfly not only fulfilled my expectations, but it exceeded them. To p---- a Butterfly is Kendrick Lamar's masterpiece IMO, great songwriting with great production.
Feb 3, 2016 I've already made posts about how much Section.80 means to me, but GKMC is the better overall album TPAB is way down here
