    Nelly is not a popular figure anymore, but at his prime he was more popular than 50, and durign 50s prime they were neck and neck in popularity. 50 Cent built himself as a brand, and that's why hes a more common name, but in no means was his music more popular than Nellys.

    He's also more influential in rap and had more staying power outside of singles. You forget before grodt dropped, 50 was one of the hottest street rappers. He had an early mixtape run and already had heavy buzz. Nelly didnt have near that buzz until his second album. His music was definitely more popular because outside of Nelly's singles, how many people can name tracks off those albums or songs in general? 50 had gems that weren't even singles fam. Nelly was more MC Hammer than a rapper. That's why now talks about him like that
