After TPAB I was wondering what direction could Kendrick possibly go next? The idea of taking all of the popular sounds of the time and putting his own Kdot twist on it somehow worked out perfectly; d--- ticks all the boxes. Few people are as well-versed in the art of assembling albums like Kendrick--every song/verse fulfills a purpose and his ability to create an overarching theme to bind his albums together is a thing of beauty. The singles were great and the album cuts anchor down what was another successful project in his remarkable career. The question once again is, where could he possibly go from here?

I never really liked Kendrick that much after GKMC. I listened to this a few times and its a huge improvement over TPAB. The Rihanna song is nice, DNA & Humble slap. Overall I guess 7.5/10Ricky, Ordinary Joel, Buddha and 2 others like this. -

A lot of nostalgia in this album for me. Sure it’s no Country Grammar but it’s a very underrated follow up; the hits never stopped and Nelly was still one of the best rappers around when this dropped, marrying radio-friendly tracks with his St Louis sound in a way he never would again. The album runs too long and sounds very of it’s time, but the producers and guests all bring it (RIP St. Lunatics) and stop it dragging too much.

Listened to this yesterday. Forgot how good this album is. Rediscovering p---- Juice has been the highlight of my week. Also, the skit where the dude is trying to buy the Nelly cd really makes you think back to a bygone era. No one rushes to the music store to buy the newest cd anymore. Anyway, this album was a bit long but is put together very nicely.

Nelly doesn’t get the respect he deserves. The man has a diamond selling album under his belt. I was just starting to get into rap around the time Nellyville dropped and I remember alternating between this, The Eminem Show and Blueprint 2 non-stop the whole year (“only dudes moving units: Em, p---- Juice and us”). Obviously the nostalgia is a big factor looking back at this album. But it still holds up surprisingly well. Maybe a little heavy ended, especially compared to Country Grammar (the whole thing is probably 20 minutes too long) but still stacked with hits, top to bottom. I never liked the St. Lunatics but their appearances add a good amount of flavour when they pop up. Looking back now its also interesting to hear how this and Country Grammar built a lot on the sounds Mannie Fresh was making from a few years prior and brought it to the mainstream. Like I said, Nelly doesn’t get the respect he deserves. Solid 7/10.Fire Squad, Ordinary Joel, Michael Myers and 2 others like this.(This ad goes away when signing up) -

Imma bust the coaches head open on some Diddy s--- if he ever talks to me son like an idiot. Just listened to this all the way through on the train like a month again and it holds up better than I remember. I wish he would have taken his time a little bit more, but it’s sgull great. I remember being on here watching the MSG release party, and I remember the OG Wolves getting leaked and I DM’d Koolo asking if this was the real thing and he was pissed cause the guy wasn’t supposed to leak it lol. I had always been a big Kanye fan, but I didn’t become a Stan until I saw the Yeezus tour, so this was the first release for me as a full on Stan. Great times.

Pablo feels less like a cohesive whole and more like a playlist; it's a mess, lacking the kind of grand, unifying theme and sound that Kanye wove into all of his previous projects, but in an endearing way, rather than the obvious, transparent way of his next album. After obsessively reinventing himself on every project up to that point, Ye hit us with maybe the most left-field move of his entire career and made... a conventional rap album. Hearing him dart back a forth from Ultralight Beam to Freestyle 4 to FML to NMPILA is honestly kind of thrilling, and doesn't come off gimmicky like it does on Ye. The writing, aside from a few verses here and there, is uniformly awful, but Kanye can still chop up samples better than nearly anyone else and stops the album from completely falling apart with some legendary beats. There are a few absolute clunkers on here (I'd be happy if I went my entire life without ever hearing Facts again), but the good songs really connect and show that the Kanye who made Yeezus is still in there somewhere. I'd be perfectly fine if Yandhi sounded like this.

I wonder if there’s ever been a rapper that remained as consistently brilliant as long as Ye did. From 2004 - 2013 (almost) everything he touched turned to gold. The songs leading up to the fabled So Help Me God/Swish/Waves seemed to suggest that his follow up to Yeezus would continue the trend. But when TLOP dropped I couldn’t help but feel underwhelmed. Theres nothing really bad about TLOP but it just feels so inconsequential next to his previous five albums, like everything was toned down a few notches. I remember a review describing it as sounding like a work in progress rather than a finished album and thats pretty much exactly my thoughts. Sure, there are some all time great Kanye songs (Ultralight Beam, FSMHP1, Saint Pablo), but overall its pretty forgettable. I’ve barely returned to it since it came out.

Hola Hovito isn't as great as the songs surrounding it, but I wouldn't call it filler. That second verse is pretty great...'you a candle in the sun, that s--- don't even out'
U Don't Know might be my favorite hip hop beat ever. Anybody who's seen Jay in concert knows that s--- sounds crazy live.
Also, I can't believe those guys on DEHH were saying Izzo is filler....WTF?

Easy 9.5
I mean what is there to say, Jay at some of his best musically ever. I listened to this so much I got sick of it and my love for it has waned over time but now I go back and think d--- Jay was at his peak on this. This is the Jay z most people think of when they think of Jay z. Takeover is the most banging diss of all time, heart of the city has one of the most iconic instrumentals in music as far as I'm concerned, and renegade is pound for pound one of the best rap songs everGawDEDEDE, Sav Stanfield, DKC and 2 others like this. -

Great production, charisma, a fantastic diss track, the one feature being a great Eminem collab, emotions, bangers and lyrical songs... this is Jay Z at his best. I wasn't old enough to experience when it dropped but the first time hearing this I loved it. And I still do, to this day. 10/10 easily.GawDEDEDE, Buddha, Sav Stanfield and 2 others like this. -

I wasn’t sure what to expect for Denzel’s follow up to 2016’s Imperial (which was very good). I had mixed feelings about the first single, Clout Cobain and its accompanying video. Was Denzel going full Juggalo on us? But Denzel exceeded my expectations with this album. I love how well the sequencing works, from ‘light’ to ‘gray’ to ‘dark’ (even though the transition from disc 1 to 2 isn’t perfect). Disc 3 is particularly brilliant, just as dark and evil as its title suggests. This is pretty much exactly what I’d want to hear from a Denzel project and I see only bright things ahead if he continues on this trajectory. I’d give it an 8/10
