I remember when this soundtrack first came, I was left feeling pretty underwhelmed but that might have been because of all the big names/expectations. I’ve since gone back to it & several songs have grown on me. The project is a bit of a mess in how it’s put together. It sounds like a a bunch of songs just thrown together but at the end of the day it is a soundtrack. I think Kendrick did nice job in putting artists on tracks that fit their styles/strengths. There are several stand out performances, Kendrick did his thing on most tracks, schoolboy was cool, Anderson .Paak was cool, Mozzy did his thing. Then of course there were the Bay Area natives that completely stole the show — SOB x RBE. These kids (yes..kids, a couple of the members were still in high school at the time) from Vallejo knew this was their moment to make an impression on a wide audience & they did not let down:
“22 or 23 I’m heavy with the heat, hit with you this chop, paramedics can’t save you, really in the field, com’on bro, I know that ain’t you, 2018, h--- no I ain’t gon’ fade you, gon’ paint you, TDE and SOB, we can’t lose”
“California n----- and I’m heavy in these streets, if you don’t keep a pole, how you ready when it’s beef?”
“One whole wood to the neck, it’s a 8th in it, new baby chop, let it sing, it’s a Drake n-----”
Hardest song of the fucken year. Project over all is a 7.5/10.Ordinary Joel, Xmipod, Sav Stanfield and 1 other person like this. -

For nostalgia reasons I want to say 10/10 but it’s probably like a mid 8 to 9, I’ll say 8.5. Generation defining album. If you mid twenties to thirties, 50 probably one of the first rappers you got into. Don’t think any rapper has ever been as big as 50 was at his peak in the mid 2000s.Jay Zeus, BIGFOOT, Sign Language and 1 other person like this. -

Growing up my sister had 2pac posters on her wall and my brother had Biggie and nwa. They loved hip hop. But there was a age gap between us and me being younger I didn’t really get it. But when Eminem came through and 50 fallowed to run the rap game.... this is what made me fall in love with him hop. This is one of the albums that gave me a passion for the culture.
10/10 I still bump itlil uzi vert stan, BIGFOOT, Ordinary Joel and 1 other person like this.(This ad goes away when signing up) -

Very impactful album for the culture. At the time Shady was hot as h---. In Da Club was f---in' hot and p---- is still even playing in clubs today... Production is great, hooks were pretty good. It got one of the best Eminem features ever. Even though, I overplayed the s--- outta this album, I can still bump that s--- from front to back without skipping a song.

7.5/10
Production is outstanding, and 50 sounds hungry and is great at crafting catchy melodies. Lyrically, apart from a few notable spots, it kinda bores me though. I like gangsta rap, but I don't feel 50 did anything new with it. Still a good and enjoyable record, but I don't think it's a classic.Ordinary Joel, Sav Stanfield, Michael Myers and 1 other person like this. -

Heart of the Projects will always hold a special place in my heart (no pun intended) cuz it kinda marks the last gasp of the free mixtape era before streaming took over. From the length to the sound and the raps themselves, it feels like a true free street tape. It was the first project I ever heard by him (though admittedly a year or so late) and songs like "SKRT" and "Pelican" and "Honeybun" and "I Remember" made me a fan. It was Painting Pictures, however, that truly hooked me, because to me that was kinda start of him moving to a more freestyle, melodic sound that culminated with Dying to Live.
On my last road trip over summer 2019 I started listening to Heart of the Projects again for the first time in ages and I regained an appreciation for the tape. It's insane to me that people listen to this and call it """mumble rap.""" Been listening to this on a weekly basis for months now and it never gets old. My only real criticism is that it's a little too long, but off the top of my head I can't even think of anything I'd cut. Also I think I accidentally conditioned my ex to like Kodak because I had "SKRT" as my alarm for like a year lol.
Insane that he made this when he was 16-17 years old. It's a shame he's a piece of s--- lol.

Heart of the Projects - Kodak Black: 7/10
The score doesn't really do justice of how much I loved this tape now that I've been reacquainted with it. Institutionalized is what made me a Kodak fan, this is the one that cemented that interest for good. It's rough around the edges like most burgeoning mixtapes but much like anything Kodak does, when he's on the ball, the outcome is always going to be a splendid song. More so, it's just crazy to see his growth from the mixtape days to what he's capable of doing on his last projects like Dying to Live.Sav Stanfield, Ordinary Joel and DKC like this. -
