Feb 2, 2026 at 2:53 PM This strikes me as a dubious excuse, since a lot of great music has come from depressed states of mind, often because of the depression rather than in spite of it. The link between depression and creativity is no secret. He wrote Rock Bottom, maybe his best written song, when he was borderline suicidal. Sayin' Goodbye to Hollywood is another great example. Would these songs still be good if they were poorly written? Yet in Beautiful his creative energy seems completely depleted. My Darling was made during the very same "depressed addict" phase, a bit further down the line I think, yet the writing in that was excellent in parts, esp the back half of the 3rd verse. Then again there's no accounting for taste if you just happen to like the verses for whatever reason. I sort of like the "bad" verses in Must Be the Ganja, but it would be hard to explain why.
Feb 2, 2026 at 3:22 PM Perfect chorus. That "sooououoh" part is a great touch. The verses are fine except for the very first line. Theres levels to depression, monkey, its not a binary switch. Life circumstances were also very different. The "youre so funny you should be a comedian" part is very Eminem-self-reflective. The atmosphere of the song is strong. Great song.
Feb 2, 2026 at 3:28 PM god gave you those shoes to fit you so put em on and wear em be yourself man be proud of who you are and even if it sounds corny don't never let no one tell you you ain't beautiful sooouohuohoh
Feb 2, 2026 at 3:51 PM There's nothing great about it though, it's syrupy crap. He sounds like a complete normie. ItsPwizz or even Ricky could have written those verses. "Eminem" is completely absent throughout them, with washed-up, spiritually depleted Marshall standing in for him. The song is strongly atmospheric all right, but it's an atmosphere of pitiful mediocrity more than anything else. Not sure what point you're trying to make with "levels to depression". Of course there are: I just gave an example of a song that was written during a time of absolute despair -- Rock Bottom, and that's a timeless classic. Surely he couldn't have been depressed as all that when he wrote Beautiful, by that time having won the "the money, the women, the fortune and fame" many orders of magnitude beyond his wildest reveries.
Feb 2, 2026 at 3:51 PM I'm smooth with it, give me the ball, you don't know what to do with it s---t it in the baskеt, you other teams need a casket LеBron sayin' don't respond, there's no back and forth This game is mental, man, I play aloud and walk away just to hush the crowd You trying to touch? Sit down Just listening to some old em and makes me realize The Game better be glad he didn’t get a response. Lmfao
Feb 2, 2026 at 3:56 PM My problem with My Darling is that Marshall doesnt say anything back except curse. No counter arguments. Still love the song though.
Feb 2, 2026 at 4:00 PM Death of slim shady proved Slim can’t be beat.GC2 was shady mopping the floor with old man Marshall
Feb 2, 2026 at 4:03 PM Depression is not sadness over lack of things. If anything, being empty after having everything makes it even worse. Like what else am I supposed to do, I'm still down.
Feb 2, 2026 at 4:03 PM Her heart's in the right place. Leave her alone. She's repeating a Native sentiment anyway, let the woman speak. & she can keep her mansion.
Feb 2, 2026 at 4:04 PM It’s true. There are several training and court floor practice terminology in that one stanza. Game can’t write like this.
Feb 2, 2026 at 4:07 PM Depression doesn't need a source or circumstance either. If it runs in the family, trauma can trigger it; for Em, Proof's death certainly sent him spiraling. But once a genetic component takes hold, it's a feature, no longer a bug.
Feb 2, 2026 at 4:11 PM paul once said gimme the ball was the first song em sent in after the od and that he legit thought em was ‘slow’ now because of how it sounded i love the song though
Feb 2, 2026 at 4:23 PM i got s--- from one of the baboons i have blocked on here b/c i said this could be his greatest verse ever. it's insane, nearly 3 minute without a let down anywhere in it. bar after bar after bar.
Feb 2, 2026 at 4:31 PM i’ve actually toyed with this notion myself. the verse is so densely packed with metaphors and little mini stories and allegories and insane wordplay and the delivery is just so perfect ai or not that i’m not even sure it isn’t his best song. like yes the way i am is more melodic, sing for the moment is more emotional, rabbit run is more energetic, my darling is more personal, legacy is more technical, but there’s sumn about this verse that just hits every single box for me all in one. it’s been at least 20 years since i’ve enjoyed a verse from him like this and if his new album is anything like this and the fuel remix, i will be an extremely happy stan. i honestly do believe he’s better than he’s ever been. and i think he believes that also, even if many detractors never will
Feb 2, 2026 at 4:31 PM Set to a higher standard. Most don’t realize what is happening, beyond syllables and figures of speech. The technicals are so advance but look common place in a song. Busta and Rakim spoke on it many times. You be shocked how detailed the process is. What most people think is a reach for a bar, it’s actually 2-3 layers deeper. Even something as silly as “Popping the most wild junk, I’m known as the prick not to f--- with” Yeah obviously prick and Not f--- with = d-ck and celibacy. But also prick goes back to Popping. Junk another association to d-ck.
