Jun 23, 2025 at 3:30 PM Eminem says himself he has hundreds of songs recorded and many of them he made for him and him alone to hear. It's not always the case that songs just don't make the album cut, a lot of songs are made with no intention of being released. I do believe with Dre that Detox spurred him on but at some point it became recording for fun. There's also a thing called quality over quantity. Just because there's hundreds of songs doesn't mean they are all good. I really do believe that what we hear on their albums is what they genuinely think are the best songs for that project. It really comes down to them recording songs for fun with no intention of being released and everyone everything else not being up to their standards.
Jun 23, 2025 at 4:13 PM i’m not sure this is 100% accurate. many times songs are taken off of albums for time constraints or because they don’t fit the subject matter or because they’re deemed overly offensive. but this doesn’t speak to the quality of those tracks. we just listened to 30 unreleased tracks (which is pretty much unheard of by the way) and every one of them is a 10/10, and most of them are better than the songs they were replaced by. i want to hear every word he’s ever recorded, all the brilliance, all the cringe, every single song there is. because even if you don’t like them, even if for no other purpose, these songs provide a super rare and, to me, fascinating glimpse of what he’s thinking at the time and how each album evolved into what we eventually heard
Jun 23, 2025 at 4:37 PM That is true too and he admits that. He says himself he has songs that never made albums because they don't sound like they fit on the album, the sound or subject is so left field. A lot of those songs we heard were rejected because they couldn't clear the samples and out said they were better than the songs that replaced them. Maybe that's why he doesn't release unreleased music, maybe he doesn't want his fans automatically saying they are better than the songs he originally put out. You see the nonsense with Encore and people trying to put together what the original album was. I really do believe Eminem when he says he doesn't have a concept or album name in mind until he's deep into the recording process. I think he has hundreds of songs that are random songs and someone has to sit and show him what songs to put together to make a project. And people forget just how much influence Interscope had over him. Relapse was rejected because it didn't have a good lead single. Back and Forth was rejected. Eminem had a few Relapse 2 sequences ready for November 2009 release and all got rejected. The bonus Refill CD was making the best of It. They didn't want to fund and release Relapse 2 due the reception of the first but he absolutely had various versions of Relapse 2 ready to go. Maybe these days since he's doing his own thing and licensing his music out but Eminem has always answered to Interscope. Apart from TDOSS....I don't think any of his albums had any real thought put into them in terms of storytelling and sequencing. He records so many songs there's always a decent pool to choose from. Maybe that's the real reason they close the vaults because fans would immediately praise it and take the attention from the album. They would automatically say they are better songs.
