Today marks the death of a rapper I once considered to be the full combo emcee of the new school. Joey Bada$$ had flow, wordplay, delivery, songwriting, and production all on his side and for a stretch between 2012-13 it seemed in my mind that he could do no wrong. His mixtape 1999 is one of my favorite projects ever, and my favorite mixtape of all time. It was a 17 year old kid spittin his a--- off with his homies and makin the s--- look easy. After 1999 dropped I seriously just scoffed at d--- near the rest of the game and though yall are letting a minor show you how this s--- is done? He then released Summer Knights which was also a really good project which showed evolution in his delivery, but the bars and beats were still rockin. Very dope project. After a two year hiatus he came back with a solid, but not great debut album titled B4.DA.$$. Almost all of the songs are dope, and he dropped one of my favorite songs of all time in “Like Me” but the last 6 tracks or so just did not hold my attention like the first 10 did. But that album was really good I will admit. Fast forward to 2016. Out of nowhere he drops an ultimate, not piece of s--- for Joey, but a piece of s--- song in general in Devastated. Funny story, I was listening to the radio and this bs came on. I didnt recognize the artist because 1. I never listen to the radio and 2. this didnt sound like anyone I had ever heard before. When I looked the song up, I saw that it was Joey Bada$$. My jaw dropped. I was on the fence about Devastated. Part of me was happy for him because he was getting his name out there and making that guap, but I was also hoping it would not mark a change in Joey’s style because being honest, that song and the style of that song is trash. Now today I log in to RG at about 8:30 and see that he has dropped a new song. I listened to it and to say the least, I am f---ing disappointed. This man has resorted to making songs about just sex and he doesnt do it cleverly anymore. Back in the day if he made a song about sex wordplay was involved and the verses were more than 8 bars long, which is the typical length for non skilled emcees. This man wrote two 8 bar verses over a ‘creative’ trap beat about sex. Sorry but what made Girls, Girls, Girls work was that Jay Z was still showing us he could rap as it was released on a CLASSIC ALBUM. You have a lot to answer for Joey and this was not the right way to follow up that garbage a--- song Devastated. But Ive lost all faith. Rest in peace to Joey Bada$$. I remember the days when you were still dope, the second best emcee of the new school behind King Kendrick. I will never forget either. But this s---, this s--- is just unacceptable.
