I had a serious question tho, what about Damon's performance was worthy of a nomination? I thought he was great and the movie was good but it was extraordinary in any way

Why can't we just stop and consider that its just simply because no black actors had any Oscar worthy performances? I haven't even watched Straight outta Compton but from what I see it was a bunch of subpar actors just making a fun bio film, which is great. Can anyone please tell me who else should be considered or got snubbed??

it's a classic "movie star" turn. sort of like how tom hanks was nominated for cast away. he was GREAT in that, but its a recognition that this is a major star carrying a film almost solely on his charisma and charm.

And honestly who gives a f--- about the Oscars anymore? You people basing race relations on award show nominations need a reality check.

Everything about the film just seemed like pro nasa propaganda that they weren't even trying to hide. I liked it so they succeeded on some level obviously

I don't get how u think it's better than interstellar in any way though

Ok you can make a case for this. It has nothing to with race though.. white actors got snubbed too.

that isn't a hard opinion. im not comparing the two like i would Godfather to the Pest. but, genre aside, i found martian to very competent, efficient filmmaking... and interstellar was just kind of a mess. it was just pseudo: pseudo science, pseudo religious, pseudo psychology. martian by contrast was thoroughly scientific (to ur point). idk, i just found it more pleasurable overall.

I saw Interstellar twice in theaters and Martian at home with my parents so idk, interstellar was one of the best movie going experiences I've had in recent memory

I absolutely detest the plot points about love being the key to everything and all that Bollywood level drivel, but it didn't matter. It engages me right off the bat and for basically the entirety of its loooonng run time. MM performance is, obviously, outstanding.

It might be in my personal top 3 for Nolan

Hollywood is the leading the way when it comes to diversity. Just look at the new Star Wars.. the directer said the cast was too white and made the stars black and Hispanic. I am against this obviously but people that are for it should be happy and not complain when the Oscars had an all white nomination when the years films were 90% all white.

the problem is that even if black actors were nominated, they would complain if a white actor won. they want to be showered with awards just for being black. actors nominate actors not the academy so quit the whining.

plenty of people were snubbed -- but ive made my case for compton pretty clear. same goes for Elba. he was nominated, and considered a frontrunner to win until, well, his snub. @JMG's argument is unserious and simplistic, which he knows.

well ok, home v. theater is vastly different as you know. i saw both in theaters and both were pretty immersive. but you said it yourself --interstellars MAIN emotional point is horseshit. sums it nicely, imo. nolan is not an emotional director -- so him going all sentimental Spielberg-y just didn't work for me. there's no way it's top three nolan for me. mm was good true.

It only happens when some idiot write its in an article and people buy into it. All races are getting poor treatments in different ways. I only bring up the injustices whites get when someone is crying about how bad they re getting treated. Just shut the f--- up and live your life and you will be fine. Turn off the tv.

No my argument is common sense. Its not simplistic when people are making such a big deal about Oscar nominations. Please explain to me why this is such a complex issue and why it matters who wins a stupid statue. You can't say black people are getting treated poorly by hollywood. Its not true.

i absolutely can. reread my arguments. its fairly symbolic, ill grant you that, but it's yet another barometer where black people are consistently overlooked. at least according to your persona here, you don't have a particularly sophisticated appreciation of black america or their contributions to culture (outside the redskins #RIPrg3) so this is fairly silly.

They were not overlooked. Either there performances weren't up to par or they are trolling people, trying to get publicity. There is no racism involved here. In the case they decided to exclude black people it was for this reason, to upset people like you and here we are talking about an irrelevant award show. I don't know what makes you think I need to have a sophisticated appreciation of black people. I have respect for black individuals that deserve it, just like any person no matter the color. I don't feel like I personally owe black people or any other group of people anything. I'm not going to advocate against the Oscars because a few black peoples feelings are hurt. I think we focus too much on trying make sure black peoples feelings are ok. Which would make me insecure if I was black. I would wonder why everyone is making me feel like i'm not good enough. That is whats silly.

It's not about diversity. Why aren't Asians in uproar about this? It's not about adding people in, it's about taking white people out.

Hollywood is very Liberal so to say they're being racist is a huge stretch.

Who was an Oscar worthy black actor this year? Ice Cube's son, maybe? Idris Elba in that movie Chad didn't see?
