Last two nights I've bumped The Sideline Story after a year or so. The album is mad nice, we got caught up in the fact that there were songs we heard before (Lost Ones, Lights Please, In The Morning etc) but they sound good 4+ years after. If we didn't get The Sideline Story I dont think Cole would sell numbers like now. Album had some radio songs, couple wannabe bangers, deep songs. Had something for everyone. Cole also learned a thing or two after the debut. Album brought some nostalgia in me. Didn't think it could happen, but d---, a whale could've swam in them tears fam.


Edit: listening to that intro before the sideline story (song) just minutes before reading Cole co-owning TIDAL. He really out of here now. I'm glad i was witnessing the ups and downs of him. He just like us. Made mistakes, but learned and got better. And still has ways to go.

Went to the Cole concert on Friday and my gawdddddd Dude played the whole album front to back and dapped me up twice in the crowd. s--- was legendary man. Had some goat mini lectures before a couple songs too. Cozz, Bas and Omen were also veryyyyyyy nice. Omen played some new s--- that had me like

theSTASHED: How did you come to produce on J. Cole’s latest album?
WB: My manager, he’s kind of a longtime friend, Money Making Matt. He’s a good dude, very upfront, straightforward dude. One day I was just sitting around working on records and he called me and told me he was about to be in the studio with J. Cole. He said “I’m about to be in the studio with J. Cole. Do you have anything for him?” I told him “I could send four records over right now.” I sent him four records but I sent three in one e-mail and the “03 Adolescence” beat, I sent him that in a whole different e-mail on purpose. I knew that from the sound of the record that Cole would pick that record. Then the very next day, Matt called me and told me he picked that exact record. I knew he was going to pick that record.

theSTASHED: What was it about that record that you knew J. Cole was going to pick it?
WB: It was just the feel of the record. I know J. Cole, just from him being the type of lyricist that he is, his influences and things like that, him idolizing Jay Z. I’m a huge New York Hip-Hop fan. That record was originally made for my beat tape. The whole premise of the tape was to make beats that have a New York Hip-Hop sound. So when I made the beat, as I was making the beat, I was like “Nah, I’m not putting this one on the tape.” I knew it was crazy. I wanted to get that one placed. I held off on the record. I figured that someone that I knew would probably buy it. Then I sent it to Cole, and that was it. I think most people relate to that story. Most people that have grown up in urban communities should be able to relate to that story. It’s a universal record.
