Now bare with me. I know all you hear about is how rap is being continually dumbed now from a lyricism standpoint and that might still be true.

But it dawned on me the other day that as music is evolving and changing, and artists are trying to outdo eachother and outdo the past, that maybe there is actually a more complex approach to some rap music, and that's having a negative impact overall.

Think about it, how often do you hear a song where it's straight forward lyrics with a clear point that only hinges on what's being said and how dope the rappers delivery and authenticity is? It's not just about how top notch the lyricism is, I'm not speaking on that. Just the approach to the whole process.

Every artist adds quirks to their verse now, or tries to be artistic with their delivery or abstract lyricism, that I feel like a lot of tracks kind of lose their meaning along the way.

Seems like no one can just spit a verse over a banging beat anymore. Rappers are rapping faster, or too vague and "artistic". Or with vocal effects. What happened to hip hop beats? Why forgo them? Hip hop beats would still be played on the radio in 2018. It's not that, people are just trying something different.

Maybe it's a good thing, it shows people are trying to move he genre farther and in new directions. But it used to be so easy to say "that's a dope verse" or "look what he did here", and it's honesty not anymore. Everything is vague or stylized. The meaning is always hidden under layers of distractions or up for interpretation. Even with 'rappers' rappers' like Kendrick.

I’m gonna preface this by shamelessly plugging my only video but you can also go ahead and use it as an introduction if you’re not familiar with my music

don’t quite have a timeline, but i’m thinking maybe june/july

posting snippets below cause that seems like a rapper thing to do

features gonna be limited probably but idk, that could change

I see this a lot. Particularly on this forum. Especially from the younger generation. I used to think this myself because of how much it was parroted, honestly. It just isn't true though.

I'm not a fan of Crooked I myself but he makes very, very good points here. Lyricism is about storytelling... painting pictures. Poetry. Something Tupac did very well. He was also able to tackle complex ideas and topics in a simplistic manner with his words. You felt his words. They carried real weight. That's a very important aspect of lyricism. A good poem isn't a good poem just because of big words (not that Tupac didn't have a relatively big vocabulary) or because it's complex. A good poem is a good poem because you FEEL it. Or maybe it just makes you think.

Here's some examples of lyricism in his discography.... I could go on though.

One of my favourite things about listening to hip hop is discovery. I’ve been listening for years but still have so much new s--- discover. New artists, groups, singles, albums, discographies, labels, cities, sub-genres. There’s an insane amount out there and I’ve only heard a fraction of it. So this club will be dedicated to discovery. Every Thursday I’ll be posting a completely random album - it could be a classic or trash, old school or new school, popular or obscure, it doesn’t matter. Everyone in the mention group can give the album a rating out of 10 and I’ll average out the scores to create a catalogue of album ratings, discuss what worked and what didn’t work, the best songs, the worst songs, the album art, the production, the lyrics, the music, everything.

Like this post or let me know if you wanna be added to the mentions

Week 1: [1999] Things Fall Apart - The Roots
    Week 2: [2015] Maxo 187 - Maxo Kream
    Week 3: [2002] The Blueprint 2: The Gift & The Curse - Jay-Z
    Week 4: [2011] Follow Me Home/[2015] 90059 - Jay Rock
    Week 5: [2007] Curtis - 50 Cent
    Week 6: [1997] Ghetto D - Master P
Week 7: [2014] The Waters - Mick Jenkins
Week 8: [2012] Mysterious Phonk: The Chronicles of SpaceGhostPurrp - SpaceGhostPurrp
    Week 9: [1996] h--- on Earth - Mobb Deep
    Week 10: [2017] Bulletproof - Young Dolph
    Week 11: [2018] Veteran - JPEGMAFIA
    Week 12: [2003] Diplomatic Immunity Vol.1 - Dipset

Like I personally think BIG was better, but if I'm being honest he has no longitivtiy ever having only released 3 discs.

What other rapper been literally releasing good music for over 20 years. Yeah, 20 years.

This man has a literal entire library worth of good listening material. He's influenced a ton of people, always remained relevant, never hit rock bottom like virtually every other artist.

Has three or four albums people will put 1-5 on any top record ever list. Anyone who actually dislikes Jay is Hopsin fan or hasn't tried listening to his music. Achieved both mainstream popularity and critical acclaim to the maximum level.

He has the pedigree, the consistent greatness and career. Is he the GOAT if you had to be as objective as possible about things?
