Considering how frequently Young Thug creates different flows/melodies/, I wouldn't call him a lazy writer. His lyrics express his character and at times provide some vivid imagery, and they're utilised in the best way possible even when they're bad, like the examples @JCinator mentioned.
I disagree with the term "lazy" because it actually takes a lot of effort to change the metre and make it sound good, while staying on beat, making nice melodies/harmonies. The writing isn't separated from the music. This only happens in rap, when many people just try to stuff rhymes in their 16's; generally in music, the writing is more dynamic and follows (or is being followed by) the piano melodies, or the guitar riffs, or the different samples, instead of being stuck on the bassline. And that takes a lot of effort to do, without f---ing it up. It's far from lazy imo. "Better" words wouldn't necessarily fit the music that well;
Ofc he fails quite a few times and uses some bad/goofy lines, but that's not a result of laziness, but because we're talking about this guy
---> (character/personality, focus). A better writer/artist might have managed to avoid the few bad lines, but hey. They don't take anything away from the project, if anything, they add to it. It's better to have a goofy/bad personality, than lacking character.
Gibbs has tried to do something similar to a certain degree (he changes his flows in many tracks), but he always stays more focused on not delivering bad lines, because he cares more about that aspect (he hasn't melodies as good as Thug, on the contrary, because he writes differently). BTNH did something similar, adn their rhymes, on paper, were pretty basic; they weren't writen to stay on the paper though. That's what I think, in general: writing is an organic process and it requires some context (when we're talking about music ofc).Last edited: Apr 21, 2015Gerald, Meero, Mike Tyson and 7 others like this.Jun 16, 2026 -

Eh, I know this a troll thread but I think it's entirely possible to understand someone else's POV if you're open minded. You don't have to have a dead mother to have a legitimate opinion on 808s. Granted, there are plenty of white boys (and really people of any skin color) who are biased against rap since a lot of its aspects are rooted in lower-class Black American culture but there are idiotic criticisms of every genre, I just assume we tend to notice cringy rap opinions more since for most of us that's our preferred genre we keep up with.
I think problems with misinformed rap opinions stem more from people who are disconnected from the culture and hear about rap from Eminem soundtracks in COD trailers n s---. -

During his last few days as a free man, he unleashed this to the fans. Biggavel lays down everything on this emotionally charged track, little did we know he'd get hit with a long sentencing and this was basically his goodbye to us. Shoutout to Young Los behind the boards for always crafting the classic sparse wavy soundbed for Max to float over.
This song is exactly what the title suggests; salacious, sleazy and exorbitant. But beneath the surface lies an awareness story Max is trying to tell about this girl, its vivid and probably applicable to our own experiences. All this while doing these absurd transitions from fast flows to brief singing and back on those two verses, he makes the task seem so effortless.
I'll wrap up the countdown tonight once I'm done with these midterms, hoping we get news from More Life or somethingCunner, aquaberryares, Ordinary Joel and 7 others like this. -
