Discounting albums from artists that were already on the list (My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, good kid, m.A.A.d city, American Gangster, Lord Willin'), here's a few albums that I was contemplating putting on the list:
1. Digable Planets - Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space) (1993)
![[IMG]](http://i.imgur.com/rZjXDna.png)
This was on my list til the last second. My second favorite jazz rap album after Midnight Marauders. I feel they get massively overlooked due to a relatively short career.
2. The Notorious B.I.G. - Ready to Die (1994)
![[IMG]](http://i.imgur.com/vuaLa82.jpg)
Speaks for itself. Probably the most timeless sounding album to come out of the 90s. It still sounds fresh today.
3. Outkast - southernplayalisticadillacmuzik (1994)
It was a toss up between this and Aquemini, but this one has a slight edge for me. Aquemini is probably their best, however.
4. Cam'ron - Purple Haze (2004)
![[IMG]](http://i.imgur.com/c7xhuEv.jpg)
I talked a lot about charisma in the Jay Z and Clipse write ups. It's only natural I'd love Cam for that reason as well.
5A. Rich g--- - Tha Tour Part 1 (2014)
![[IMG]](http://i.imgur.com/l24sFpO.jpg)
5B. Isaiah Rashad - Cilvia Demo (2014)
![[IMG]](http://i.imgur.com/Iks06jg.jpg)
5C. YG - My Krazy Life (2014)
![[IMG]](http://i.imgur.com/cUbeOjT.jpg)
I honest to god love all three of these albums...but I think I'm a little bit biased toward 2014 because it was the year I graduated from college and went on a cross-country road trip so I have a lot of great memories associated with these albums.
Edit: cuz narsh bitched I wrote these on the bus:
Givenchy and Flava sold me on Thug from first listen. Rich Homie Quan's contributions get overshadowed by Thug's but I'd argue he's just as good and the chemistry is what makes the tape. Listened to it every day on my road trip.
Cilvia Demo is a perfect night driving album and shows massive potential for Isaiah. It's the best non-Kendrick TDE album by far IMO. I listened to it driving through Tennessee at night in the winter and that turned it up to 1000 for me in terms of nostalgia (it came out my last quarter of college as well). Honestly this > TPAB.
My Krazy Life also came out my last quarter of college. It was one of those albums I checked out on an absolute whim, but ended up being one of the best choices I've ever made in terms of music. I love his and DJ Mustard's take on G-Funk. Kendrick stans are mad that another Compton artist made a narrative-based album but the similarities basically amount to that A. It's a narrative-based album, B. There's a song about a robbery, and C. They're both from Compton. Top 15 rap album of the 2010s tbqh

2. Clipse – h--- Hath No Fury (2006)
Of all the major rap artists to come up in the 2000s (50 Cent, Game, Kanye West, Dipset, Lupe, etc.), I’ve always felt Clipse didn’t get enough credit – I’d even go so far as to argue they have the best album released in the 2000s out of all of them (hint: it’s this one, though Lord Willin’ isn’t too far behind). The best part about Clipse is that, while they’re not quite underrated, no one overrates them either, so there’s not much stanism associated with them. One day last summer, I was stopped at a red light and there was a guy sitting on a half wall smoking a cigarette. He heard me playing Lord Willin’ out of my car and we proceeded to yell over traffic and have a 30 second conversation about how more people should consider Pusha and Malice some of the GOATs. Clipse fans are the best fans.
Lord Willin’ is a classic, but h--- Hath No Fury is on another level. One of my favorite things about Push (and Malice, but I’ve never listened to his solo s---) is his tendency to rap over unorthodox beats. There’s a reason why I mentioned this album in @Koolo’s topic about albums that still sound fresh, and that’s because the production on here truly is timeless. I suppose it’s still a product of the 2000s more than anything, but it’s not one of those albums you can listen to and say “oh, this was made when X was popular.” The Neptunes’ production is immaculate, Push and Malice are rapping at their peak, and both in combination blow me away no matter what year it is. Also, you know how I mentioned Jay had an almost “villainous” charisma on Reasonable Doubt? It’s nothing compared to that of Clipse. “Yo whatup ma I got a pocket fulla stinkies, let’s go spend these right quick,” might be my favorite opening line of all time. From “Momma I’m So Sorry” to “Nightmares,” it truly is a trip. Also, Coke Rap is the best subgenre. Just throwing that out there.mow, Ordinary Joel, what and 16 others like this. -

To address the topic at hand, I'd like to talk about where I'm at with Drake at the moment
Prior to its release, Views to me felt like it was going to be Too Big To Fail. Part of this was the amount of time Drake was taking to complete it (he announced the title what? Like 2 years ago?). Part of it was that he was now becoming bigger than ever and I thought he'd want to capitalize that (sort of like Wayne did in his prime with C3 - not his greatest work, but exactly the album he needed to release in 2008). Part of it was that I was extremely intrigued by the sound he pursued with If You're Reading This; while I wouldn't quite call it uncharted territory, it was a substantially darker atmosphere than I had been expecting from Drake, sort of reminiscent to House of Balloons/Thursday-era Weeknd. While that tape was a bit spotty, I took solace in the fact that Drake himself admitted as much, and said his next album would be far more cohesive.
Turns out that not only is If You're Reading This more interesting than Views, it's better. Views is the newest album from the biggest artist in the world, and it feels like it. In this case that is not a compliment. Drake sounds like he's got nothing to prove here, and there's nothing driving the making of this album outside of a big fat paycheck from Apple. Most of the attempts at introspection were executed to far greater effect on Take Care or even Nothing Was the Same. The poppier songs sometimes hit the mark (One Dance, Controlla, and especially Hotline Bling are irresistible), but the album's 80+ minute running time is a slog to get through. This isn't helped by some lyricism that flirts with (doesn't achieve, but flirts with) Recovery-era Eminem levels of cringeworthiness. The Bentley line in the opening song genuinely sounds like something that would appear in an SNL parody of Drake. Plenty of other lines throughout the album (the Happy Meal line, "Chaining Tatum", the double cross line) are equally painful.
None of this is to say that I think Views is a terrible album. There are a lot of fun songs on here, many of which will be getting plenty of play from me in the months to come. But overall I can't help but think that it marks a major missed opportunity for Drake.ANOZ, lil uzi vert stan, Ordinary Joel and 16 others like this. - Mar 1, 2026
