Columbus circle, awesome indie movie I found on netflix. Well written story and loved some of the twists and how everything connected, well done and some good acting too.

Its nice when you find those low budget movies that maybe not a lot of people know about on netflix that end up being really f---ing good. Just watched Dog Pound with my girlfriend and it was pretty great makes up that I had to watch some horrible movie called Jail Bait to have it recommended to me.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes:

A highly cliched formal and narrative structure undermine any semblance of originality and substance. Some great action sequences, though.

    52/100 - Mediocre

Guardians is awesome. Certainly better than Dawn. However, if the comedy doesn't work for you it's kind of worthless. Another one of those films I doubt I would like all that much if I didn't see it with a crowd.

    Heat (1995, Michael Mann) - 8/10
Paths of Glory (1957, Stanley Kubrick) - 10/10
    Cannibal Holocaust (1980, Ruggero Deodato)

@Narsh GOTG was hyped as a world building space opera and it was a rushed origin story with a sense of humor. The world it built had no flair or semblance of visual identity. It had the harmless appeal of a Pixar film. The drama wasn't dramatic and the action was the same derivative, kid-friendly stuff we've seen in superhero films for the past decade.

    The Maze Runner (2014)
My girlfriend made me watch it. Had no expectations going in. I knew some of the actors from Skins and Game of Thrones. Another entry into the young adult lit trend that hasn't captivated me since Harry Potter. If it does get a sequel, I have no clue where they're going with it. The movie completely lost me in the last 15 minutes.

    The Great Gatsby (2013)
Girlfriend also made me watch it (I see a trend here). Another movie aiming to leach off of young adults who read books. Part jewely advert, part roaring 20s fantasy. Who decided a period piece needed that much green screen work? The soundtrack is laughably out of place. If Tarantino can effectively use Rick Ross in a Spaghetti western, anything should be possible, right? Apparently not. That worked because the tones worked together. This movie had the same sad a--- Lana Del Ray song playing every 5 minutes. You can retool the instrumentation all you want; It's still a somber love ballad. It's not right for every scene. Beyond that, it looks like the Tim Burton Chocolate Factory. The movie sold it's soul to the top 40 charts and Tiffany & Co. to afford sets it didn't need and actors it didn't deserve.

    Spirited Away (2001)
This s--- right here? This s--- right here?!? This is how you captivate the imagination. Story telling is an artform, not some mad lib for you to fill in the blanks with. In America this s--- would've been that 3D animation that ages terribly, had two sequels plus a TV show, and anything tangential to macabre would've been left in the editing bay.

@CharlieWork I liked guardians for how light hearted and care free it was. And a handful of characters were great. Idk, I enjoyed the f--- out of it and that's kind of all I look for with a film like this.

But oh yeah The great gatsby was a piece of s--- despite the GOAT Leo tryin his best to save it

I liked Pacific Rim a lot. Probably because there weren't 7 giant robot movies every year by the same studio taking place in the same universe.

Pacific Rim was the only one I saw in theaters. What isn't better in theaters, though? Plus I grew up watching Gundam. I just liked that all of the filler (AKA plot, characters) were really underdeveloped/simple. It knew it's selling point. It never pretended to be anything more than giant robots fighting monsters.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier was pretty great considering I fell asleep at The Avengers premier.

The only time I've fallen asleep in the theaters for an "action" movie was the first Transformers

It was also my 14th birthday and I was high as s--- so there's that

    Interstellar, 8/10.
I'm more a 'simple' movies guy, where I don't have to think a lot about the story/plot (i.e. the Expendables). So this was something different, but surprisingly I liked it.

i never once saw it described as that/expected it to be that way. Honestly, I didn't give two s----s about the galaxy because I knew it was connected to the Earth marvel movies. It would be a waste of time to do so. It isn't like Guardians of the Galaxy is gonna become it's own thing or anything.
    probably

I saw it described that way post-release by people who saw the movie. There's even an article on Guardian: "Out of this world: Are space operas making a comeback?"
The fact that it isn't its own thing is why I thought it failed. How long before their copy+paste aesthetic is dead?
Regardless, this is kind of like ordering a burger from McDonald's and complaining about it. I should have known what to expect.
