Title: Three 6 Mafia - When The Smoke Clears
Standouts: Sippin' on Some Syrup, Who Run It, Tongue Ring, I'm So Hi, Who Run It
Skips: Mafia N****z, Barrin You b------s, Touched Wit it,
    Score: 7/10
    Final Thoughts:
IMO this album effectively showcases Three 6 Mafia's dark, gritty style. Blending horrorcore themes with hardcore Southern hip-hop, the production by DJ Paul and Juicy J create a haunting atmosphere with heavy bass lines, sharp snares, and eerie synths. Lyrically, the group delves into dark and controversial topics like drug use and violence. The album solidifies Three 6 Mafia's place in the rap game with its dark, gritty, and unapologetically raw sound. It's an excellent example of Southern hip-hop and horrorcore, bringing a unique sound that stands out from the mainstream. While it may not be for everyone, and it can feel repetitive or filler at times, if you're a fan of gritty, hardcore hip-hop, you won't be disappointed.

I feel like I've let you all down this week, I only listened to this twice as Why Lawd! took up most of my listening time which itself has been less this week.

Overall I enjoyed the project but not as much as other Three Six Mafia's stuff. I'm terrible with track names, even after 10 spins! So can't really mention highlights or lowlights. Although there was one song that was annoying with a phrase that I can't even remember now being repeated through the whole thing.

They had a winning formula and I'm disappointed with myself that I found out about them late in my life. Shout out to @Wreckless for introducing me to them in one of our lives listening sessions we used to do year years ago.

So yeah, s--- review - sorry.

Score 6½/10 as I enjoyed it but not enough to prioritize it.

    First Listen Review:
f---ing b-----r, love this s---. Three 6 Mafia has been in my life for as long as I can remember, growing up in Tennessee, so this sound has always been special to me. Three 6 were truly ahead of their time and it shows with this highly influential project. b-----r after b-----r, really only 1 super weak track to me across the 19 songs on here, that track being Barrin You b------s. Sippin On Some Syrup, Tongue Ring, Who Run It, all legendary tracks that happen to be on this album. Like most of y’all have been saying, this album does suffer from having too many tracks, and if the weaker ones were left out, this project would probably be a 9 or even a 10 for me. It was very rare that I wasn’t nodding my head while listening to this album. Fun music all around that will always get you amped up. Legendary s---, hoping I can see Three 6 and Yela in concert together in Huntsville in a couple months.

RIP Gangsta Boo, Lord Infamous, and Koopsta

Thanks for the pick @Omar Little !

Three 6 Mafia - When the Smoke Clears

    OVERALL RATING: 8/10

I’ve always been a fan of this Memphis sound. It’s a classic, timeless sound that almost never gets old. I’ve heard plenty of Three 6 Mafia songs but never listened to a full album. For the most part, this album was fun to listen to and nearly every song was a b-----r. As I was making my way through this album I honestly thought it would be a 9/10.

However, as the album went on it started to wear on me. While I like the repetitive nature of a lot of the songs, sometimes it got too repetitive (Act Like You Know Me). That coupled with the fact that this thing is a whopping 22 tracks starts to get tiring after a while. I also didn’t care for the skits.

Despite all that negativity, I simply like this sound too much to give it a bad score. I guess I have a soft spot for it. Perhaps if the skits and some songs in the latter half were removed, this album could be a 9/10 for me. Unfortunately that’s not the case and like I said the album started annoying me towards the end so I gotta go with 8/10 instead.

Sorry for my late review, even if it won’t count towards the score here it is:

    Standouts:
    Sober, Liability, Hard Feelings/Loveless
    Skips: Supercut
    Score: 7/10
    Final Thoughts:
While I don’t listen to pop music that often, I really enjoyed ‘Melodrama’. Which isn’t surprising as I also enjoyed ‘Pure Heroine’ when it came out. It's emotionally powerful and well-produced, as well as somewhat experimental. Lorde's singing is captivating; her voice feels genuine and personal. The album has a good mix of catchy pop and deeper, more artistic songs. However, the transitions between high-energy tracks and slower ballads can feel abrupt, and the themes feel repetitive at times.

Overall, while it's not something I see myself returning to, Melodrama is a solid album that shows Lorde's growth as an artist. It's worth a listen for both new and long-time fans.

    Cilvia Demo Review

    OVERALL SCORE: 7/10

FAVORITE TRACKS: Webbie Flow, Cilvia Demo, Ronnie Drake, Sililoquy, Shot You Down

LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: Tranquility, West Savannah (I wanted to like it I dunno, find it kinda boring)

    NOTES:
    Isaiahs flow is great

The songs I like I really like, the songs I don't I really don't like them.

Production is nice, I like a lot of the beats

The Beat on Sililoquy is hard as f---

Wish Kendrick would have been on Shot You Down

Overall I really like a good amount of this album, added a bunch of it to my big playlist. Will be checking out his other albums

    Final Thoughts (Skit):

I'll only go into more detail if I feel like it's necessary

Also, I'll only use integer numbers for scoring cause I could never tell the difference between a 7.5 or 7.3 lol, ofc I know a 7.5 means it's better than a 7.3 but c'mon, when it comes to scoring unless you're doing some type of calculation I don't see how you can give an album an 8.4 instead of just an 8 imo

(The forum kept going out of service while writing, so I apologize for the wait)
There are many artists that have widely agreed upon "best albums". Most people say that Illmatic is Nas' best, Daft Punk's is Discovery, and so on. But some artists have multiple candidates for this title. Whether it be Pink Floyd or David Bowie, many artists have multiple albums that can be considered their best. And when it comes to one of the most beloved bands ever, I certainly have a favorite.

My fourth pick for AOTW Club is....

The Beatles - The Beatles (White Album)

The Beatles, also known as the White Album has to be one of the most fascinating records ever made. As the band's ninth record, The Beatles is a postmodern work who's production essentially led to the band's breakup in 1969. The White Album also serves as the defining point where the Fab Four really started developing into their own solo artists, which means that the songs attributed to each Beatle can be radically different from one another. The record encompasses the political turmoil that permeated throughout 1968, and it arguably serves as the band's most political album, to the point that Charles Manson believed that the record was an apocalyptic message (This is how I feel about Revival btw)

The album's variety makes it a bit divisive, as even though it contains absolutely classic tracks like "Where My Guitar Gently Weeps", "Blackbird" and "Revolution 1", it also has some some questionable pieces like "Wild Honey Pie". I think that viewing The Beatles as a stream of creativity definitely helps the experience, and the innovations in genres like blues (Yer Blues), Heavy Metal, (Helter Skelter) sound collages (Revolution 9) make the White Album one of the most influential records ever made. It is a tad bit long, but I hope that everybody enjoys the experience.

Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot… The Son of Chico Dusty

    RIPPER ROO’S RATING: 6/10

I see reviews online giving this album 9s and s--- like that, but I just don’t feel the same way. I don’t have any favorites on this album I’ll be honest. It’s not a bad album by any means, but I didn’t enjoy listening to this album very much at all. I actually think I’m being generous in giving this album a 6/10. I thought I’d like this album a lot more but I just don’t.

Big Boi has a lot of lines that made me cringe but overall his delivery is very unique and entertaining for the most part. There’s some weird flows here and there that just aren’t pleasing to my ears though. I also hated a lot of the features on this album. Not a fan of that awkward trying too hard to be sexy Jamie Foxx feature, hated Vonnegutt, hated Yelawolf’s Eminem impression, didn’t like Sam Chris’s voice. Love how that awkward Hustle Blood song with Jamie Foxx is immediately followed up by a better version of the same song. Janelle Monáe carries Be Still while Big Boi adds almost nothing. The song with Gucci Mane is kind of a b-----r I guess, probably the best song on the album.

In some parts the production is creative and layered, but in other parts feels weird and cheap. Still not sure whether I like or dislike that choir on General Patton. On one hand it’s cool at first but as the song goes on it gets old, goes nowhere, and ultimately feels basic.

I know it feels like this review is overly negative, but there’s some parts of the album I like. Feel Me, Daddy Fat Sex, Turns Me On, General Patton, Tangerine, Be Still, Night Night, Shine Blockas, and Back Up Plan are overall decent to good songs even though some of those have elements I really don’t like. Tangerine is pretty d--- catchy in the most part, and I’d probably bump that in the whip.

I almost wanted to give this a 5/10 or lower, but there’s a decent amount of songs I still like and Big Boi offers a lot of personality here so with how unenjoyable this was for me 6/10 seems like a pretty fair score. Most of these features and production choices along with some awkward lines and flows from Big Boi bring the album down for me a lot. Not bad though, I’m just not gonna give this a high score just because everyone else I saw on the internet did. Overall slightly above average album, I expected to like this more with all the hype and positive reviews I saw, but oh well. @AOTWClub

    Evad's Time Capsule

Is it a bit safe? Yeah. But considering the time constraints I don't have a problem with it at all.

Play That Funky Music is a very fun opener, classic song in a long line of classics to come

September is one of the most infectious songs ever made, perfect on every level and if there's a person on this earth that doesn't agree then they're devoid of a soul

I really appreciate a Steve Miller pick here, Jungle Love is still known but I'm happy you didn't go for some of the more obvious picks. f---in love Steve Miller Band and this song is no exception.

There's little that needs to be said about Little Red Corvette, in the Prince vs MJ debate I've always listened to more Michael but Prince has so many incredible songs its not even funny, this being one of them of course.

So Fine is one of the only tracks here I haven't heard at least from what I remember, I adore this track though. I'll take funky dance tracks from this era all day, some of my favorite music ever made and this is definitely going in a few playlists.

Even though I've listened to a lot of MJ I haven't been listening to him much the past couple years. I've been recently bumping more Jackson 5 but every time I hear anything off of Thriller I'm reminded it's very arguably the best album ever, and Billie Jean is a highlight of an already incredible project. One of the best songs of all time.

I love Tears For Fears with all my heart so I greatly appreciate this inclusion, Head Over Heels is a personal favorite but they're so good all around. A perfect concentration of every good part of this sound during this time.

Not much to say about It Was A Good Day, nother undeniable classic endlessly listenable.

Nuthin But A G Thang is in a similar boat, I still like Dr Dres newer production but there's something so perfect about his output during this time just a immaculate distillation of the west coast sound that's timeless.

R.I.P. da goat Coolio, Gangstas Paradise is Bohemian Rapsody tier where I think every soul alive has heard this song at some point and for good reason. Another example of a perfect song.

Dear Mama like all the other rap tracks you've chosen is perfect, I think you chose a good list of songs to encapsulate rap for the context of the prompt. I miss hooks like this man.

Everytime I hear this version of The Man Who Sold The World I almost forget its live because it sounds so good. Easily one of the best covers ever made, definitely in the list of cover songs that basically become the official version much like Hurt by Johnny Cash.

Elliott Smith is an artist that's a major blindspot for me even though I've really wanted to give some of his projects a listen so Miss Misery is the only other song in this list I've never heard before. That being said I really really loved it and saved the track almost immediately, thanks for forcing me to listen to someone I knew I'd like lmao

Today is another b-----r, Smashing Pumpkins are goated. I've heard this song so many times I almost have nothing to say about it other than it's great and I'll always be happy to listen to it again.

Out of any band that deserved multiple picks for the prompt Nirvana is probably the one most deserving, not people have heard these songs but it feels blasphemous to not have them represented multiple times. All Apologies was a good pick where it's a classic but it's not in my immediate thought as a pick which I appreciate.

I've been in a more fun depressing music mode than a Radiohead style depressing lately, that being said I almost forgot just how good Exit Music is. Basic b---- answer for my favorite Radiohead song is Karma Police but this is definitely going back in the rotation it's been a minute and its definitely in the conversation, i love Thoms higher register when he start singing harder. Good closer as well!

Favorite Songs: September, So Fine, Billie Jean, Head Over Heels, The Man Who Sold The World, Miss Misery Exit Music.

I love every song but if I'm giving large scores partially due to playlists having a lot of music I've never heard before I figure it's only fair to give a *very* slight demerit for having a lot of extremely well known songs. Either way this was still an incredible mixtape especially considering the time crunch. Good s---! @Evad

    Score: 10.0 (16/16)

Is it safe? Sure. Would this mixtape be perfect for if aliens came to Earth and asked for some of the best music the 70's-90's had to offer (for whatever reason)? Also sure. This mixtape truly feels like a mixtape that somebody in the 90's would've made that captured some of the best music to come out of these decades, and that is what I appreciate about this (besides the obvious that it is 16 back to back bangers).

Glad to see you back, Evad!
