You bring up a good point. If someone isn't into rock music it's likely they haven't heard those albums. Though these bands were very popular at some point.

SOAD hasn’t released anything since 2005 and Disturbed really lost their momentum after the late 2000s. So I guess they’re not considered mainstream artists anymore.

Lots of options still on the table both underground and mainstream.

Choosing an album isn’t easy. Some of us have been having these listening sessions for a long time before this thread so it eliminates many potential picks.

I don't like picking albums that are too mainstream. Though the following were very strong candidates.

System Of A Down - Toxcity
AIice in Chains - Dirt
Disturbed - Ten Thousand Fists & Indestructible
Akon - Konvicted

Might be going full send on this next one even if there's a good chance it doesn't get a lot of reviews

I just threw all the songs from the albums (not selected by me) from this thread that I put a like on into a playlist on Spotify. Not including this week's album, the total comes out to 189 songs and 11hr 44min. That is insane and so much music already. Once again, that doesn't even include Krit's album, Trav's album, and songs that I didn't like and it is still that lengthy. Love all the new music I have discovered from this!

The Bad:

I was pleasantly surprised by the alternative rock sound and 'clean vocals' as I was expecting something gothic or black metal.

The album starts off flawlessly, the first 4 songs are all keepers. Just a Car Crash Away is a skip for me but then it’s quickly followed by another standout track.

Aside from that, I don’t have much else to add. It's a really solid album. There are a few weaker tracks in the second half but I appreciate that the album isn’t too long.

I usually add songs to my library selectively to avoid cluttering it with tracks I don't enjoy. Then there are times when it makes more sense to preserve an entire album when more than half the songs are good. This is one of those albums.

"Smells like children" is an ep from early in his career that's bizarre like truly a f---ing weirdo EP but contains "Sweet Dreams" which is a great song

Marilyn Manson is a band (and artist) that I have a pretty odd relationship with, because I'm very familiar with a lot of their work, while simultaneously having no experience with a lot of it. I might've mentioned this ITT before, but I legitimately love Manson's first four albums. Portrait is great, and I believe that the "Triptych" that includes Antichrist Superstar, Mechanical Animals, and Holy Wood is one of the best trilogies in music history. But despite this praise, I really have no experience with the band's work after that. Aside from a couple songs from 2004's The Golden Age of Grotesque and his Kanye collabs (what a weird combination huh), I have absolutely no experience with the band's music after the early 2000's. The reason I bring this up is to establish what I think of when discussing Manson: A band that has experimented with Heavy Metal, Industrial, Glam Rock, Electronic etc. while also using outlandish concepts like Aliens and Satanic imagery to make some legitimately profound music

Before discussing the album itself, I want to comment on the band lineup for this record. This record is missing many of the band members that truly made the band's earlier run special like Twiggy Ramirez, Madonna Wayne Gacy, Ginger Fish and John 5 (this might be an unpopular opinion but as much as I like Zim Zum, John 5 is a much better guitarist). For the most part this album is entirely the work of Manson and Tim Skold. And honestly as much as I love the work that the former members contributed, I think Skold does a great job holding his own.

Then there's the album. First off, I think that some background is definitely needed when discussing this record. Most of the lyrics revolve around Manson's relationship with his then girlfriend Evan Rachel Wood. There's some lyrical allusions to Vladimir Nabokov's "Lolita" (which I've actually read before. Amazing novel, especially with such a controversial subject matter), and this is a bit more "emo" than Manson's former work. His vocal tone is definitely different from before, but not in a bad way. I actually kind of find it refreshing that this record tackles different subject matter than what the band had done before. Like Ripper mentioned, the drums are great, the guitars are amazing (Skold f---ing kills it on "Putting Holes in Happiness) and it all sounds very cohesive.

Overall, I really enjoyed Eat Me, Drink Me. I'm probably gonna check out the band's 2004 album after this, and maybe I'll check out their work that comes after (I've heard good things about Pale Emperor). Big Thanks to @Justin Trudeau for recommending this album and yeah.

This is why I think a 5 star scale makes more sense even tho 10 pt scale "feels" better lol. On a 5 star scale people generally consider 3/5 good but on a 10 point scale they consider 6/10 mediocre even tho they're the same.

this is how I think about it:

5 - classic: must listen for all music fans in general
4 - great: must listen for fans of the genre
3 - good: despite some flaws it's definitely worth listening to as a whole
2 - mediocre: has a handful of good songs/ideas but falls flat as an album in the end
1 - bad: maybe has one solid song but the rest is terrible and entirely skippable
0 - awful: virtually nothing redeemable about it, only worth listening to as an exercise in learning just how bad music can be
