I'm '89 so close enough. I think on balance getting older is great but the b---- of it is that it's just impossible to connect with new music like that. Having said that if another 19 year old came through and dropped an Illmatic I'm sure I'd recognize the greatness.

Ya. My POV, which is mostly informed by managing a lot of the younger generation over the years, is that it's a nuanced problem but there's two real differences between them and us when we were that age. Technology has cooked them and robbed them of the most necessary tool of creativity, which is boredom. And then, there's a pressure to conform that's like infinitely more intense than what we had. We obviously all still live under that same pressure but it's harder to stick your neck out the younger you are. I feel for them, for real. That's why I keep bringing up age when it comes to the Cole/Kendrick thing. Cole's responding like a 39 year old, lol. Like of course he's aware of how much he's being clowned. He just doesn't care.

To be more specific, a large part of Coles fan base are people who don't like contemporary rap. The rappers ripper roo mentioned are pretty mainstream mostly.

I think that's just age. Cole's got a big fan base for sure. Lots of younger people. But the core fans are in their 30's or older. I never met a 30 year old that liked any of those rappers. No way. There's no dad out there listening to a Glo Rilla album. The old dudes like Elliot Wilson or Joe Budden wouldn't pass a polygraph test when they give that s--- props.

Like I'm pretty excited about the fact that the same artists that were on top 10 years ago are still on top. But I"m like where's the new guys? When Jay/Nas/Em etc were this age I thought those dudes were OLD. Still good. No doubt. But they weren't hot like Wayne and T.I. to name a few.

it's not just age it extends a bit further. I would say most J Cole fans arnt fans of trap legends like future, thug, Chief keef, etc who are pretty much from the same generation as Cole.

s---. Ya that's a good point. That stuff really isn't for me. I definitely can get with the hits but I'm not sitting down listening to Chief Keef album cuts. Honestly, that's why I don't really care if people don't f--- with Cole. Not everything is meant for everybody.

I just think some people need to try to have open minds when it comes to newer rappers, that’s all. I never liked when people dismissed a whole generation because they heard a few rappers they didn’t like

It's a two way street though. You gotta be undeniable. Like I can't tell you how long it took Drake to be accepted. I don't think Drake really got his props from the gatekeepers and tastemakers until If You're Reading This. And IMO time shows that he put out 3 classic albums before that! So Far Gone, Take Care, NWTS. But like dude had to put out hit after hit after hit and then it's like you can't say anything about this guy. I don't think I'm the guy you're talking about here but sounds like me and Uncle Luke are desperate to feel one of these rappers and it's just not hitting. But I can listen to So Far Gone and completely understand why a 30 year old at the time wouldn't feel that s---. I thought Drake sounded like some suave ladies man. That dude sounded like a punk! But it's a classic to me cuz the music is good and I was the right age for it when it came out.

I think the whole dynamic in rap is changing. The idea that it’s a young man’s game is dying out. We have elder statesmen like Jay Z, Eminem, Black Thought, Kanye, etc. still rapping and in some cases still killing it. We have rappers blowing up and entering their primes in their 30s like JID. We have so many different subgenres of rap now too. A lot of things are changing and it’s gonna take a while for everything to fall back into place. COVID had big changes on the music industry too. I think rap is in more of a transitional period right now.

It’s weird how that used to be so much more normal, discovering albums from the early-mid 90s that came out when I was an infant/very young child some 10 years after they came out was such an integral part of me falling in love with rap. I guess there is just too much new music being constantly put out now right at everyone’s fingertips
