f--- Cole bitter a---. Making an average album and milking it dry. And now hating on the young gawds. Hope he flops hard on the next project and doesn't ever come back.

Localizing it those guys writes them off as "trap rappers" when they're so much more. He's probably just talking about formulaic trap songs.

Saying he doesn't like Future, Young Thug, Trav or Fetty based on that quote is a hugeeee reach.

    >if kanye west is the goat
    >and we all accept that he is the definitive goat
    >why he f--- with future, trav, and young thug (multiple songs and studio sessions with all of them)
    >but he don't f--- with cole (career snub outside of one good friday verse that he only gave cole cause us stans demanded it)

Cole lost. Kanye a visionary. Maybe he sees thug, future, trav etc as the future of hip hop.

Also, this thread a bit of a reach. Coles camp listens to future almost religiously lol. His manager dubbed march madness as the PSA of this era. Young thug also said he has Cole and Kendrick influences on his new album so I'm sure there's somewhat of a relationship there.

Last year around this time, J. Cole did an interview with Angie Martinez. It took place shortly after his performance on Letterman.

    J. Cole states the following about "that kinda music"

"This music is killin us but it makes money.. trash.. it's trash. I don't mind or I don't get upset when those songs come on but I don't spend a single minute of my life listening or delving into them. It's so generic and we've been recycling those songs for so many years now, it doesn't mean anything, the youth wants something new"

Basically he's saying he can't stand the music of fellows. like Young Thug, Future, Travis Scott, Fetty Wapp and all those guys.

Doesn't really surprise me to be honest. What about you ?

    He proceeds to say :

"I think me and Kendrick are doing a good job at fighting this but I feel like ..2 people in the mainstream are not enough.."

    Thoughts ?

its not 1993. times change. the genre is evolving. trap can have just as much meaning as any conscious record if they wanted to. trap is actually more ahead of its time than anything j cole is doing.

    Thug isn't even "trap"

he's just "Hip-Hop" in general, going to be the next Wayne..and probably even bigger in the next 5 or so years

I agree that Trap music is just horrible, but I would never put Thugger on a list of Trap rappers; or trap music in general

If you want good "Trap Music" I suggest you listen to TI's album by the same name

You can't just make assumptions about what type of guy J. Cole is and what artists he listens to based on that quote though.

He would absolutely call Kendrick about Young Thug, and I'm sure he probably already has. Thug is a future star and the industry knows it - 50 Cent, Pusha T, and Vince Staples have all publicly praised him. Young Thug has some of the best melodies and cadences in rap right now. As a rapper who also has really good cadences, J. Cole would prob be a fan. You can't just write Young Thug off as a trap rapper, he's so much more.

Future too, I don't even remember a song this personal on any of J. Cole's studio albums.

    J. Cole consistently tries to make music based on interpersonal relationships, but he hasn't really exposed his own life or his own hardships at this level outside of a few bars (first things first, rest in peace Uncle Phil and the first verse of Apparently).

I don't want to make this a Cole vs Future thread so I'll just try to illustrate this briefly but:

Cole has often talked about cheating in his music, it's a central theme to a lot of his songs. But with that, he's scratching the surface. Like I said in that post, his music is often about interpersonal themes, not personal. 03' Adolescence is story telling Cole (at his finest) - even if it's inspired by true feelings, there is no doubt some use of creative license. Future isn't scared to expose himself, and not just a semi-fictional version of himself.

Again, this is not a Cole vs Future argument I'm perpetuating, I'm just trying to illustrate how much more Future is than just a "trap rapper" so let's compare him to Drake instead. Artists like Cole and Drake (Drake more than Cole) are great at giving listeners 'just enough' when it comes to these type of songs. How many times have we heard Drake rap about the girl who never believed in him, or the once innocent girl who is now "grown up"? These are general themes in his music, but he has never delved in to them and really exposed himself. No comments on the Rihanna relationship (or the many that failed) the way Future refers to the Ciara break up, etc. Obviously Drake is capable as he's given us music like "Look What You've Done" but the point is so is Future. And he's really good at it.

So when the OP quoted J. Cole in saying he doesn't like trap music, and then takes that to conclude that J. Cole doesn't like Future, he's missing it with Future.

That's all I'm saying, I'm not knocking Cole.
