The internet is pretty complicated but the basics aren't hard to understand.

At the most basic level its just a connection method for two remote computers to transmit data from each other. The connections are made by your Service provider who connects to other service providers to the target computer.

But the internet itself isn't really a thing. It represents the connection of different networks (like for example, the local area network (LAN) at your house which connects to the wide area network(WAN) provided by your isp.

It's not. It's just a term for the connection between different networks via service providers.

If the internet was one big hub then that would be possible but that's not how it is.

See the explanation above about pc to pc connections. Webpages are nothing but files stored on a machine that can be accessed remotely using a server, and a server is just a machine that controls/regulates the flow of data and said date comes en-masse from the connections given by the isp.

If one server shuts down then the webpages/sites that are hosted by it will go down. If an ISP goes down then every server dependent on that ISP will be isolated. But the internet itself can never go down entirely.
