With all the outlets to show off your music or designing, what do you prefer to use to promote yourself? Do you stick to one or try to branch out to as many as you can?

I have social media accounts for my music, but aside from random snippets on soundcloud/instagram that I tweet out or post to tumblr/facebook I don't do anything else.

I'd like to promote myself and get more exposure and more people listening to my music, but I'm not sure where/how to get started, and I feel like it's really gonna be hard when I make music in such a specific category.

I try getting as much blog exposure as I can. Time consuming but it's usually worth it.

Post on as many forums as much as possible
Social media
Get d list rappers who are affiliated with bigger names
Collab collab collab
Consistently drop quality music

eh, i'm probably the only one who can speak to this with any sort of authority.

lots of collabs are a bad idea. songs with two or three rappers don't get placements, even if one of the guests is, as you put it, a d-list rapper.

posting on forums is a bad look and makes you look like an amateur if you get outed. (also, there's almost no one on a rap forum who can give you meaningful advice.)

you need to create a consistent (as in internally consistent) sound, preferably one that's unique to you. you don't garner a reputation for this by jumping on a bunch of songs or being overexposed online.

I'm genuinely curious to know if you could offer me any advice as a producer trying to get more exposure. I'm f---ing awful at promoting my music, and I don't really feel like I know how to go about it other than putting it up on social media accounts and random forums.

I think you should try to get a hip hop site like complex or bossip to interview in front of a billboard that is scheduled to come down...but make sure you hire your own guy to take it down an hour before it is scheduled. In the act of taking the billboard down, have your guy fall off the platform with his safety harness on... Then, while the website's cameraman is filming you climb up to the top as fast as you can and pull him back to safety. Then descend the billboard's ladder, pick up the boombox you staged next to it earlier and start blasting your new single with it on your shoulder.

I don't really promote myself.. I just post updates from Twitter, then when I release an LP/EP.. I post them on Twitter.
