Feb 10, 2016 a big idea i feel like a lot of people are missing is thugs ADLIBS. this is what people are commenting on when they say he "uses his voice like an instrument". everyone sings, but thug uses adlibs in a unique way - super frequently and with a lot of attention to filling the beat in interesting ways. not that the other ideas here are wrong, but as far as I can tell, use of adlibs is the only unique way his voice is used instrumentally.
Feb 11, 2016 U reading too much into this, think people say he uses his voice as an instrument because the style contrasts the traditional idea of rapping not because its some groundbreaking musical innovation. With that said tho, his voice does allow to be used (as an instrument) to an extent that few do. When he's doing his singing/croaking its less about hitting a note, like traditional singing is, than it is about his timbre. Thats whats unique about it
