    Jay writes in his head, but read interviews with people who work with him: he comes up with completed verses--sometimes songs--before he steps in teh booth.

    Regardless, @Topdawg doesn't have the first clue what he's talking about. Almost every major label rapper writes in the booth to an extent because that's how making music works.

    I'm not saying he's less of one, i'm saying I don't think of him as a songwriter in the traditional way. He's still a songwriter though.

    My point is that if you think everyone in the country was bumping De La Soul and nothing else from 91 til Nelly came out, that's not the case. A bunch of different sounds have always been popular concurrently.
