Feb 11, 2024 Revival was Eminem’s attempt to have another Recovery Pop sensibilities type of record. It why the Main Radio pop single had Ed Sheeran who was the biggest pop act in 2017 at that time. Even the structure of river was similar to love the way you lie. Well on water started the theme of Eminem being a rap god but having vulnerabilities, a key component to his success. He speaks about his struggles in his music and his status. Like in White America and cold wind blows. Those were great opening tracks. Walk on water would have hit different if the same message was loaded over trap drums. Eminem was just out of time and let bad production get in the way of his rhyming. Bad Husband, In My Head, and fan favorites castle & Arose would have carried the album to Recovery level of appreciation if the album was sonically better in tune to what was popping in 2017. Critics just hyper focused on his corny bars and ignored the actual fire rhyme schemes he was spitting on Framed and even belive. In fact I think Belive is overhated, it well written. Especially the last verses. Only thing I can’t defend is that Phresher feature and untouchable. I understand the switch up and message but it was ear grating. Em could have just asked for a traditional beat in of cluttered Rock samples. Just horrible. Also I would have moved Beyoncé onto a more upbeat song, have Alicia keys on walk on water. Overall the album definitely deserves its lashings from critics and fans after such a long break. But as for actual rhyming and rapping, em wasn’t slipping like most hiphop heads like to believe
